As a seasoned Alan Wake fan who has weathered countless supernatural storms in Bright Falls, I can confidently say that the addition of the Black Rock Launcher to the arsenal in Alan Wake 2: The Lakehouse DLC is a welcome change, especially for those nights when outrunning enemies just isn’t an option.
In the initial “Alan Wake”, your firepower was limited to a pistol or rifle primarily. However, in “Alan Wake 2”, Remedy significantly expanded the diversity of weapons available.
Moving from a crossbow to three varieties of shotguns, the weapon selection in Alan Wake 2 is impressive, with the newest addition being the Black Rock Launcher, introduced as part of the Lakehouse expansion pack.
To me, it stands out as quite distinctive among the other weapons in the series, even though its primary function is to vanquish a specific type of foe in the additional content.
To repel the Painted Shadows, introduced with the Lakehouse DLC, without needing to outrun them, securing this particular weapon is essential for you right away.
In addition, there are two special awards linked to the Black Rock Launcher, however, let’s delve into how you can obtain this weapon in Alan Wake 2: The Lakehouse – we’ll cover more about these trophies later on.
Location Of The Black Rock Launcher
The Black Rock Launcher is located on Sublevel 1 of the Lakehouse facility, specifically in the Inventory section of the floor.
There’s a switch in the Panel Control Room section. Activate it once to progress past this floor via the elevator, and remember to reactivate it once you get back to access the room containing the Black Rock Launcher.
As a gamer, I can tell you this crucial piece of information – without the Security Clearance 02 keycard, I’m afraid I won’t be granted access to the room housing that powerful weapon.
That keycard is available on Sublevel 2, a floor you’ll go to after clearing Sublevel 3.
In the second part of this game, I’ll grab a pump-action shotgun, which will be my weapon of choice when squaring off against the Taken in Kieran Estevaz’s initial intense battle of the DLC.
After that, the process continues by repeating until you solve a quick riddle involving shifting a generator battery within the same location. Once solved, you can reactivate the power to ride the elevator down to Sublevel 2.
How To Get The Keycard And Advance Sublevel 2
On reaching Sublevel 2, labeled “Holding and Observation” due to its locked state, you’ll find that the majority of adversaries confined within these sealed chambers are essentially harmless for now. To unlock these areas, you must navigate to the Control Center on your map and deactivate the lockdown there.
En route, feel free to chat with the amiable NPC, Ed Booker, stationed in the Southern Detention Center. He shares captivating backstory about his role within the storyline.
Above all, don’t forget to explore one of the computer code puzzles located near his cell, which are among the five you must solve for the trophies/achievements within the Lakehouse DLC expansion.
Retrieve the keycard from the person at the Control Center console, figure out the computer password code to bypass the security lock, and then follow your path backwards to the elevator.
On your journey back, eliminate or avoid any adversaries you encounter as this will be your last time here, unless there are still items left to collect.
Return to Sublevel 1, where you had previously manipulated the switch to rearrange the paintings, and use it once more to push the painting wall away from the entrance of the Black Rock Launcher Room.
Make your way to the specified room, employ your recently acquired Access Card for the 02 Clearance to unlock the door, then proceed to the right side upon entering to claim your sleek Black Rock Launcher.
How To Use The Black Rock Launcher
In simpler terms, the Black Rock Launcher operates much like a Grenade Launcher, and for those of you who are familiar with Destiny 2, it’s quite similar to using the Ex Diris Grenade Launcher.
For optimal effectiveness on the Painted Shadows, make sure to give the weapon a quick charge for about a second before discharging it. If executed correctly, it will eliminate them with just a single shot.
Keep in mind that ammo is scarce to find for this weapon.
To find the two related successes when utilizing it, it would be most beneficial to activate the Infinite Ammunition mode found within the Gameplay settings menu.
As a fellow enthusiast, I heartily recommend creating a manual save within the safety of Sublevel 4’s sanctuary before proceeding. This is crucial as you’ll encounter not one but two types of formidable foes – the Painted and the Taken – on this level before reaching the finale. By saving here, you can easily reload the game to claim those well-deserved achievement points related to these enemies when needed.
Here are the two awards/accomplishments detailed below if you wish to check them off for a 100% completion:
- Less Carrot, More Stick: Defeat one of each enemy in the Lakehouse with the Black Rock Launcher.
- Pull the Painting Out: Defeat a Painted enemy before it leaves the wall.
Instead of waiting until Sublevel 4 to perform the first task with the Infinite Ammo feature activated, it’s more effective to carry out the second action immediately after obtaining the Black Rock Launcher in Sublevel 1.
Before the enemies completely materialize from the wall, make sure to load up your weapon first, then fire the moment you notice their appearance animation.
I’m crossing my fingers that it will earn you the trophy/achievement. If not, don’t forget you can simply revert back to your saved game and give it another go.
