Disney has released the official trailer for its live-action remake of Moana. The trailer offers a much longer look at Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui. While a short teaser was shown last year, this new trailer really highlights the character – his tattoos, impressive size, and trademark humor are all on display. The movie, which continues Moana’s story beyond her island, will be in theaters on July 10, 2026, and aims to capture the magic of the beloved 2016 animated film.

The original Moana movie was a big hit with both critics and audiences, earning about $643 million around the world. Now, with the new live-action version, a lot of excitement centers on Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui. This first glimpse of Johnson as Maui shows how the filmmakers are staying true to the original while bringing the character to life in a new way.

Dwayne Johnson’s Maui is Both Familiar & New

The new trailer gives us a better view of how the character Maui is coming to life with Dwayne Johnson playing the role. The movie’s visuals are richer and more detailed, with environments and effects brought to life with greater realism. Characters like Te Fiti return with updated designs that work well in live-action, and natural elements like water and fire appear with added texture, creating a more believable and immersive look compared to the animated version.

The team has strengthened the connection to the original story. Lin-Manuel Miranda once again collaborates with Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina on the music, and Mancina also wrote the film’s score. Auli’i Cravalho is an executive producer, and Thomas Kail directs, with support from producers Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, and Hiram Garcia.

As the July 2026 release date nears, the trailer gives a clearer look at Disney’s plans for the live-action Moana movie. It shows Maui playing a key role in helping Moana save her people.
