Ultra Instinct is a truly exciting addition to the Dragon Ball series, arguably the best since the original Super Saiyan transformation in Dragon Ball Z. Most Dragon Ball power-ups simply increase a character’s strength, but Ultra Instinct is different – it’s focused on mastering skill and technique. While it does boost power, the biggest advantage of Ultra Instinct is the ability to react automatically and effortlessly to any incoming attack.
Goku first accessed Ultra Instinct during the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super, but mastering it wasn’t just about increasing his power like in DBZ. Ultra Instinct has several different levels, each with unique abilities and power increases. While Goku is the primary user of Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super, he isn’t the only character who can use its different forms.

5. False Ultra Instinct
Users: Bardock, Master Roshi
The form known as “False Ultra Instinct” doesn’t have an official name within the Dragon Ball universe, and it manifests differently for each character who uses it. In the manga version of the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super, Master Roshi uses a self-taught version of Ultra Instinct against Jiren. Because of his incredible martial arts skill and experience, Roshi instinctively understands the core ideas behind Ultra Instinct and can activate his own version to evade Jiren’s attacks.
During the backstory of the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Bardock displays a power boost that looks remarkably like Ultra Instinct while battling Gas. His hair even appears similar to Goku’s when using Ultra Instinct Sign, and Gas later mentally links Goku’s Ultra Instinct to Bardock during their fight. However, Bardock’s power-up is simply a strength increase, not connected to any martial arts principles. While neither Bardock’s ability nor Gas’s connection is true Ultra Instinct, they’re noteworthy because of how much they resemble it.
4. Ultra Instinct Sign
Users: Goku
Ultra Instinct Sign is an initial stage of Ultra Instinct, where a fighter starts to access its power but doesn’t fully transform. This form gives the user a silver and black appearance and allows them to instinctively dodge or block most attacks, as long as they can maintain the form.
Unlike the full Ultra Instinct, Ultra Instinct Sign doesn’t provide a significant increase in power and can fade quickly if the user loses focus. Goku first accessed this form during his fight with Jiren in the Tournament of Power, but he couldn’t maintain it for long. While it’s not ineffective – particularly for defense – Ultra Instinct Sign is the weakest official version of the technique.
3. Ultra Instinct
Users: Goku, Beerus, Merus, Moro, All Angels
Ultra Instinct is a powerful transformation originally designed for angelic beings. When someone uses it, they empty their mind, unlocking all their hidden potential and gaining the ability to react to any attack automatically, effortlessly dodging and countering. This transformation greatly increases power, speed, and mental clarity, but it requires a focused mind and a strong foundation in martial arts. Whis demonstrates Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F before Goku achieves it during the Tournament of Power.
Goku’s Ultra Instinct changes his hair to white, but beings like Angels don’t have any physical changes when they use it. Even Beerus, a God of Destruction, can access this power. When Moro steals Merus’ abilities, he gains Ultra Instinct too, but his human body can’t handle it. This suggests that truly mastering Ultra Instinct requires a power level comparable to a god, as using it with a lower power level can destroy the user from within.
2. True Ultra Instinct
Users: Goku
True Ultra Instinct is a more advanced form that falls between Ultra Instinct Sign and regular Ultra Instinct. Currently, in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goku is the only one who can use it, and even the Angels don’t appear able to achieve this transformation. What sets True Ultra Instinct apart is Goku’s ability to combine it with his Super Saiyan powers, adding even more strength.
If Goku uses Ultra Instinct as his normal state, he can become even stronger by transforming into a Super Saiyan, effectively adding the Super Saiyan power boost to his Ultra Instinct abilities. We’ve seen him combine Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue with True Ultra Instinct during battles with Granolah and Gas, making this combination one of his most powerful forms.
1. Perfected Ultra Instinct
Users: Goku, All Angels
Perfected Ultra Instinct, or Mastered Ultra Instinct, is the most powerful form of Ultra Instinct. Unlike earlier versions, it can be activated instantly and used at will, similar to transforming into a Super Saiyan. Goku first achieved Perfected Ultra Instinct through training with Merus before his fight with Moro. Later, he pushed himself further to remove any mental blocks, allowing him to use it freely during battles, like against Gas.
In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goku demonstrates complete control over Perfected Ultra Instinct. After Gohan Beast briefly knocks him out of the form, Goku instantly re-activates it, proving he can switch it on at will. This perfected version essentially removes the mental focus previously required for Ultra Instinct, giving the user a significant power increase and all the form’s abilities without needing to be calm and collected.
