8 Best Villain Groups In Anime, Ranked

Many popular shonen anime stories are made more exciting by strong villains, and these villains often work together in groups. Across the anime landscape, there are countless amazing villain groups whose memorable designs, powers, and intimidating presence have left a lasting impact. Whether they’re still a threat, like the Phantom Troupe from Hunter x Hunter, or have been defeated, such as the League of Villains from My Hero Academia, these groups have all become iconic in the anime world.

Espada

  • Anime: Bleach
  • Leader: Aizen

Bleach is a hugely popular anime, often mentioned with One Piece and Naruto as the ‘big three.’ While it doesn’t quite reach the same level of popularity as those two, Bleach still boasts some incredibly memorable villains. Recently, the Quincies have gained a lot of fan attention, but the most iconic and unforgettable antagonists from Bleach are, and always will be, the Espada.

The Espadas are instantly recognizable villains in the world of anime. They were powerful enemies for the Soul Reaper captains, and some of them are still considered significant characters today.

Disaster Curses

  • Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Leader: Mahito

Jujutsu Kaisen features compelling villains, with Sukuna and Kenjaku being particularly memorable. Beyond these individuals, the series also introduced a significant antagonist group called the Disaster Curses. This group played a key role until the Shibuya Arc, where they were completely defeated. Notable members included Dagon, Jogo, and Hanami, but Mahito truly stood out as a leader. His actions in Shibuya were so impactful that he even reappeared briefly in the Modulo sequel.

Twelve Kizuki

  • Anime: Demon Slayer
  • Leader: Muzan

Among newer anime, Demon Slayer has presented a particularly memorable group of villains: the Twelve Kizuki. This group consists of twelve demons, divided into six Lower Ranks and six Upper Ranks. While the Lower Rank demons weren’t very significant and were quickly defeated by Muzan, the Upper Rank Kizuki are a genuinely terrifying force.

Akaza, Doma, and Kokushibo were the three most powerful demons in Muzan’s Twelve Kizuki. They proved to be incredibly strong and terrifying opponents during the final battle in the Infinity Castle. Each of them was powerful enough that no single Demon Slayer could defeat them in a one-on-one fight. They were second in strength only to Muzan himself, the King of Demons.

CP9

  • Anime: One Piece
  • Leader: Rob Lucci

One Piece is a very lengthy series, and throughout its run, Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, have battled many villainous groups. While they’ve fought enemies like Baroque Works, the Beast Pirates, and the Donquixote Pirates, CP9 is still considered the most memorable and iconic group they’ve faced.

The CP9 served as the primary villains during the Enies Lobby arc, delivering some of the most memorable fights in the entire One Piece series. Their leader, Rob Lucci, was an exceptional villain and remains a fan favorite. Though the original CP9 group no longer exists, many of its members have since been elevated to the CP0 organization.

League of Villains

  • Anime: My Hero Academia
  • Leader: Shigaraki

The popular anime series My Hero Academia finished its run last year, and with it, the main group of villains, the League of Villains, were defeated. The League of Villains had been a constant and powerful threat throughout the entire series.

Originally created by All For One, the League of Villains later came under Shigaraki’s control. Notable members like Toga and Dabi served as central antagonists in the series’ Final War arc. Each villain had a complex backstory, and many were surprisingly relatable, which made them popular with fans. While divisive, the League of Villains was a truly frightening yet captivating group of villains.

Phantom Troupe

  • Anime: Hunter x Hunter
  • Leader: Chrollo Lucilfer

As a huge fan of Hunter x Hunter, I have to say Togashi really knocked it out of the park with the Phantom Troupe – seriously, one of the most iconic villain groups ever in anime! They’re also known as the Spiders, and their leader, Chrollo Lucilfer, is just incredible. He’s easily one of the strongest and most compelling villains in the whole series, and a character I always love to watch.

The Phantom Troupe really stood out during the York New City arc of the Hunter x Hunter anime. However, their story continues in the manga and is actually central to what’s happening now. They’re considered one of the greatest villain groups in all of anime, and their spider tattoo is instantly recognizable to fans.

Homunculi

  • Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Leader: Father

The Homunculi are legendary villains, and even years after the end of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, many fans still rank them among the best villain groups ever created. They were originally created by a character named Father, with each member designed to embody one of the Seven Deadly Sins.

Throughout the Fullmetal Alchemist series, the Homunculi proved to be powerful opponents in many battles. Characters like Lust, Pride, Envy, and Wrath are among the most recognizable and memorable.

Akatsuki

  • Anime: Naruto
  • Leader: Nagato

When it comes to anime villain groups, the Akatsuki from Naruto are arguably the most famous. This powerful organization includes members like Itachi, Kisame, Pain, Konan, Obito, Deidara, Hidan, and Sasori, and they consistently challenged the heroes throughout the series. While they were a constant threat from beginning to end, their full impact and motivations became clearer in the second half of the story. The Akatsuki were incredibly strong – some of its members were even more powerful than the village leaders, known as the Kage.

The group disbanded after the Fourth Great Ninja War, and the series hasn’t captured the same excitement since, especially when compared to the popularity of the Akatsuki. The Akatsuki became incredibly iconic, and their black robes with red clouds are arguably the most recognizable anime outfits ever created.
