Special Event Lets You Live Out a Real-Life Dungeons and Dragons Experience

Gamers will soon have the chance to experience a real-life Dungeons & Dragons adventure! This multi-day event, happening in May, will immerse players in a quest, complete with horseback riding and camping.

As a huge fan, I’ve seen how much of an impact Dungeons & Dragons has had on everything! It started as a niche tabletop game, but now it’s one of the most famous fantasy games ever. And it’s not just games like Baldur’s Gate 3 (which is amazing, set in the Forgotten Realms!) – the way D&D plays, tells stories, and even the kinds of characters you find, have influenced so many different games, both tabletop and beyond. Honestly, for someone like me who really loves the series, it feels like this is the perfect way to really elevate your D&D experience.

Dungeons and Dragons Real-Life Experience Sends Players Questing

A new immersive Dungeons & Dragons event called Millbrooke Realmquest is coming to a ranch near Chicago from May 1-3. It combines the storytelling and gameplay of D&D with live-action roleplaying (LARP), letting players fully embody their characters – created using standard 5th Edition character sheets – in a real-world setting. The event centers around solving a mystery during a wedding tournament and includes activities like horseback riding and archery. Participants can camp overnight and enjoy a themed tavern, with a hog roast (and vegetarian alternatives) providing food and drinks.

Carol Cronin, the event director, told Polygon that the ranch frequently hosts themed events. Last September, they held a Renaissance Fair, and previously they’ve done events based on video games, including one inspired by Red Dead Redemption. That event divided players into two teams – Dutch’s gang and the Pinkertons – and featured a mix of scavenger hunt and tag. It culminated in a water gun shootout, mirroring the conflicts between the Van Der Linde gang and the Pinkertons in the game.

The Dungeons & Dragons event appears to be very well-planned, with four Dungeon Masters leading the game. It was developed over several months by Cronin, who collaborated with Dungeons & Dragons DM and creator Michael Chun, known as Mizzko. Chun emphasizes that they’re focused on making sure every moment of the event feels meaningful and fast-paced.

The upcoming Dungeons & Dragons event will feature three separate groups, each with its own campsite, bonfire, and unique storyline. Please note this is a true outdoor experience – there will be no electricity available. Everyone will be sleeping in tents, and tent rentals are available for those who need them. The cost to participate is $500 for players who want to include horseback riding, which comes with two special quests designed for riders. If you’d rather stay on foot, the participation fee is $400.

Okay, so our D&D event went really well, and we’re hoping to make it a yearly thing! If you couldn’t make it this time, don’t worry, you might get another chance next year. We’re also doing more Red Dead Redemption events if you’re more into the Wild West vibe instead of swords and magic. We’ve got dates set for May and June already. Honestly, if you’re a fan of either game and want to really feel like you’re living in that world – whether it’s the Forgotten Realms or the old west – you’re gonna have a blast at either event.
