Akane Osaki is a 17-year-old with a deep love for rakugo, a traditional Japanese storytelling art. She grew up watching her father perform and became fiercely dedicated to it, defending him against any criticism. When her father had to give up his dream, Akane decided to pursue rakugo herself, becoming an apprentice and striving for the highest level of mastery. This is a challenging goal, requiring years of hard work and good fortune. It’s especially difficult for Akane because rakugo is still largely a male-dominated art form in Japan, with only about 7% of performers being women.

Studio Zexcs Is a Lesser Known Studio, but Its No Slouch
The manga series Akane-banashi, created by Yuki Suenaga and illustrated by Takamasa Moue, has been running in Weekly Shonen Jump since February 2022. A real rakugo performer, Kikuhiko Hayashida, oversees the rakugo depicted in the series, ensuring its authenticity. Though it might not appeal to all readers at first glance, Akane-banashi has gained a dedicated following, much like other series that focus on traditional arts, such as Chihayafuru and Hanayamata. Notably, it has impressed influential creators like Eiichiro Oda, author of One Piece, and Hideaki Anno, creator of Evangelion.
The anime adaptation of Akane-banashi is being produced by Zexcs, a studio founded in the late 1990s by a former producer from J.C. Staff. Though you might not recognize the name, Zexcs has worked on several well-known anime, including Sister Princess, Da Capo, Rental Magica, Diabolik Lovers, and The Great Passage. Ayumu Watanabe is directing the series, which is notable considering he’s also directing this season’s popular fantasy anime, Witch Hat Atelier. The series writer, Michihiro Tsuchiya, also has a strong resume, having previously written for successful shows like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Pokemon.
