Shonen anime is well-known for its incredible action scenes, and the battles are often a major highlight. While many fights involve hand-to-hand combat, like in Dragon Ball, weapons aren’t unusual. Swords, especially, can add extra excitement and create visually stunning, unforgettable moments.
Over the years, many incredibly skilled and powerful swordsmen have appeared in Shonen anime, captivating fans with their amazing abilities and strong attacks. While anime is full of impressive sword users, a few stand out as truly exceptional. This could be due to perfect technique, unique powers that give them an edge, or simply an unmatched level of mastery.
Dracule Mihawk – One Piece
Mihawk is known throughout the world of One Piece as the greatest swordsman, proving that strength and elegance can coexist. He first gained notoriety by defeating Zoro, a very powerful character in the series, without even unsheathing his sword. Since then, his power has continued to grow, and no one has ever been able to challenge his title.
Even in a world filled with people who have extraordinary, supernatural powers from Devil Fruits, Mihawk is still considered one of the strongest fighters – and he doesn’t rely on any of those powers himself. He’s incredibly strong naturally, and also possesses advanced forms of Haki, which make him exceptionally difficult to defeat. While Zoro may one day become stronger than his mentor, Mihawk, known as Dracule, currently stands above everyone else in the world of One Piece.
Hiko Seijuro – Rurouni Kenshin
Hiko is a highly skilled swordsman and Kenshin’s teacher, renowned for his mastery of the Mitsurugi-Ryu style. He’s a formidable fighter who can defeat nearly any skilled swordsman in anime. Years of experience have given him incredible strength, allowing him to even battle his student at full power while intentionally limiting his own speed and agility with a weighted vest. Beyond his physical power, Hiko is incredibly nimble and appears to have no significant weaknesses.
What truly sets Hiko apart is his incredible speed and reflexes – far beyond those of an average person. He’s a phenomenal fighter who once stopped a building-level attack with just one hand, completely unharmed. Despite not having any magical powers or special abilities, Hiko is undeniably the strongest character in Rurouni Kenshin, and one of the greatest fighters ever seen.

Kisuke Urahara – Bleach
While incredible strength and special powers often make a fighter unbeatable, skill and training are just as important. Urahara, a former captain in the Soul Society and a highly respected teacher in Bleach, demonstrates this perfectly. He’s definitely not weak – in fact, he’s stronger than most characters – but he isn’t the most powerful fighter in the series, proving that technique matters just as much as raw power.
I’m a huge fan of Urahara, and honestly, even though he might not be the strongest fighter out there, he’s incredibly skilled and experienced. He’s been honing his abilities for decades, and it shows – he’s just a naturally gifted combatant. What really sets him apart, though, is his mind. He can size up an opponent and pinpoint their weaknesses almost instantly, giving him a huge edge against anyone less seasoned. Ichigo is powerful, sure, and he’s probably even stronger now, but he still lacks that refined technique Urahara possesses, which is crucial in a direct fight.
Yoriichi Tsugikuni – Demon Slayer
Muzan Kibutsuji, the most powerful and cruel villain in Demon Slayer, inspires terror in anyone who knows of him. However, there’s only one person in history who not only lived after facing him, but actually defeated him: Yoriichi, the strongest swordsman ever seen in the series. Yoriichi created the original Sun Breathing technique and is considered the originator of all other sword fighting styles, making him an incredibly powerful warrior.
Even Muzan, incredibly powerful himself, couldn’t inflict any damage on Yoriichi during their fight. This showed that Yoriichi was not only stronger than the leader of all demons, but also likely the greatest Demon Slayer ever. Unfortunately, we don’t know the full extent of Yoriichi’s power because he lived long before the story began. However, the stories of his feats are legendary, giving us an idea of just how strong he truly was.
Gintoki Sakata – Gintama
Honestly, Gintama has to be one of the most wonderfully bizarre and unpredictable anime I’ve ever seen – it’s just so funny! But what really surprised me is how it could switch gears from total silliness to seriously awesome action. Our main guy, Gintoki, is a total beast when he needs to be. He’s got this incredible backstory as a soldier and is a master swordsman, which means he can take on pretty much anyone. It’s mind-blowing – he can even slice through metal with a wooden sword! It just shows you how incredibly strong he is.
I’ve noticed that Gintoki, compared to a lot of swordsmen in anime, wasn’t about flashy moves or perfect technique. He fought in a way that was chaotic and just kept coming at you. It really threw his opponents off balance, because they had no idea what he’d do next. He wasn’t necessarily a genius, but he was clever. He could quickly think up surprising strategies to outsmart tougher enemies and find a way to land the final hit.
Erza Scarlet – Fairy Tail
In the world of Fairy Tail, where magic and superpowers are common, relying on ordinary weapons isn’t always effective. However, Erza Scarlet, a remarkably powerful mage within the guild, has become a top fighter despite this. She achieves this through a combination of her special magic – which lets her summon many different types of armor – and her incredible dedication to training.

Erza never backed down from a fight, confidently relying on her power and abilities to get the job done. Beyond her general strength, she was a master of Sword Magic, letting her control weapons with just her mind. This gave her a significant edge against other sword-wielders in the anime world.
Hiei – Yu Yu Hakusho
Many action-packed anime series, especially those aimed at young boys (known as Shonen), often feature characters who become incredibly skilled in one specific fighting style throughout the show. A classic example is Dragon Ball, where the heroes are all masters of hand-to-hand combat and rarely use weapons. However, Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho is a notable exception. Before becoming a renowned swordsman, he was already highly skilled in martial arts, making him uniquely versatile.
Honestly, I’m blown away by Hiei’s raw power! He’s just so much faster and physically stronger than most Shonen heroes I’ve seen, and his skills with a blade are incredible. It’s not just about cutting, though – when he’s wielding a sword, it feels like certain doom for anyone who stands against him. And as if that wasn’t enough, he can even infuse his weapon with demonic flames! He can attack from a distance or deliver a finishing blow to even the toughest monsters – it’s seriously awesome.
Yami Sukehiro – Black Clover
The Black Bull guild is known as one of the strongest in the Clover Kingdom, largely due to the skill and guidance of their Captain, Yami. Originally from the Land of the Sun – a nation renowned for its sword magic – Yami was rigorously trained in the art from a young age. Despite his powerful physique, he moved with incredible fluidity and speed, often catching opponents off guard and making it nearly impossible for them to defend against his attacks.
Beyond his incredible speed, the Black Bull Captain was known for his skillful technique and immense strength, transforming graceful movements into devastating attacks capable of overwhelming even the most powerful magic users. As a last resort, Yami could also utilize the Dimension Slash, a technique allowing him to cut through space itself to strike his opponents.
