Chapter 1178 of One Piece was a wild and unexpected ride. Most of the chapter centered around Luffy and Loki teaming up to defeat Gunko, which they did surprisingly quickly. With Gunko now out of the picture, recent events – particularly the apparent arrival of the real Imu in Elbaf – strongly suggest the Straw Hat Pirates are heading for a major defeat.
How Luffy and Loki Teamed Up To Beat Gunko In The New Chapter
When the Elbaf arc started, few One Piece fans predicted Luffy and Loki would become allies. However, as the story unfolded, it became apparent that Loki wasn’t a villain. With the arrival of the Holy Knights, a team-up between Luffy and Loki felt inevitable, and it finally happened in recent chapters. Specifically, in chapter 1178, they combined their powers to fight Imu, taking the brunt of Imu’s attacks while Imu was possessing Gunko.
Luffy and Loki fought back, successfully damaging the World Sovereign and removing it from Gunko’s control. Unfortunately, this victory unknowingly set them on a path toward their own defeat.

Why Imu’s Arrival In Elbaf Spells Danger For the Crew
In One Piece chapter 1178, Loki froze Gunko, allowing Imu to leave their body. Now, it seems Imu is heading to Elbaf. Imu told the Five Elders they would be leaving the Holy Land temporarily, and will likely use the power of the Abyss to travel to the Land of the Giants. This marks the first time Imu has ever left the Room of Flowers in Pangea Castle, revealing their true form outside of it.
Thirty-eight years ago in God Valley, Imu only acted through others to handle problems. Now, it’s different – Imu is personally taking action, revealing themself as the ultimate enemy. This means Luffy and his crew have no chance of being prepared, and are therefore destined to lose.
Assessing The Chances Of A Straw Hat Defeat On Elbaf
Watching the current situation, it’s hard to see the Straw Hat Pirates winning. They’re powerful, sure, but I don’t think they have what it takes to beat the final villain, Imu. Honestly, Imu losing right now would completely derail the story. It feels like defeat is inevitable for the crew, and tragically, I think someone’s going to die. With Luffy already out of Gear 5, I expect Loki to fall to Imu soon, and the rest of the Straw Hats won’t stand much of a chance after that.
There’s no chance the Straw Hats will win this fight. Imu is almost guaranteed to come out on top, and that’s what makes this story arc so thrilling. It significantly raises the stakes and makes the future of One Piece more uncertain than ever before.
What Will Happen To The Giants And The Warland?
Now that Imu has arrived in Elbaf, the Giants have almost no chance of winning. It’s baffling how this situation will resolve itself. Luffy isn’t strong enough to beat Imu in Elbaf, and Imu can’t enslave the Giants – doing so would eliminate a key ally for Luffy in the final battles, just as Harley predicted.
It seems Luffy will likely have to make a huge sacrifice to protect his crew and ensure they can reach Elbaf. Regardless, the Straw Hats are facing almost certain defeat in Warland, and the future of the country is uncertain.
One Piece chapter 1179 will be available to read on Manga Plus on April 5, 2026.
