7 Best Adventure Anime (That Aren’t One Piece)

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is a consistently enjoyable and rewarding series, largely thanks to its compelling characters. Led by Monkey D. Luffy, the main crew is easy to support, and each member has a clear and interesting backstory. The ongoing mystery of what the ‘One Piece’ actually is – and its potential power – has kept fans hooked for years. However, the heart of One Piece‘s appeal is the exciting journey it takes both the characters and the audience on.

Although One Piece is a legendary adventure anime, many other fantastic shows in the genre deserve attention. Over the years, several adventure anime with creative stories and compelling ideas have emerged. Here are some of the best adventure titles that aren’t centered around Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates.

Samurai Champloo

Okay, so I’m totally obsessed with Samurai Champloo! It’s this incredibly cool adventure set in Edo-period Japan, and it’s created by the same genius behind Cowboy Bebop, so you know it’s good. What I love most is how stylish it is – the action is so fluid and the animation just pops. But it’s not just a typical samurai story; it throws in all sorts of unexpected things – hip-hop music, modern fashion, and other stuff you wouldn’t expect to see in that era. It’s a really fresh and unique take on the samurai genre, and it just works brilliantly!

The story centers on Fuu, a young woman searching for a samurai who has a unique scent – like sunflowers. Along the way, she teams up with Mugen, a reckless and unpredictable outlaw, and Jin, a reserved and wandering samurai. Despite its often humorous and over-the-top moments, the series is a compelling samurai journey filled with surprisingly heartfelt emotion, and the three characters share a fantastic dynamic.

Hunter x Hunter

There are two anime versions of Hunter x Hunter, so it can be tough to know which one to watch. The older version from the ’90s is good, but we recommend the 2011 adaptation.

At its core, this series is about the strong friendship between Gon and Killua. They complement each other well, leading to heartwarming scenes and impressive growth for both characters. While it doesn’t cover the entire story, it’s still a very enjoyable experience.

Dragon Ball

When it comes to exciting adventure anime, Dragon Ball is a must-watch. While the series has evolved over time, its early focus on adventure heavily influenced many later anime, like One Piece.

The original Dragon Ball was a truly exciting adventure, following Goku and Bulma as they searched for the Dragon Balls and encountered memorable characters, forging lasting friendships. While the series later became known for its intense action, it remains a classic adventure anime at its heart.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a deeply moving story. It centers on brothers Ed and Al Elric, who suffer terrible consequences after trying a forbidden practice called Human Transmutation—Ed loses an arm and a leg, while Al loses his entire body. The series follows their quest to make amends for this mistake, cope with the repercussions, and find a way to restore themselves, all while facing a hidden danger.

As a huge anime fan, I can’t recommend Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood enough! Seriously, if you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out. I just loved following Ed and Al’s journey, and the way the story wraps up is incredibly satisfying. Plus, the world they built is just so detailed and believable – you can really tell a lot of thought went into it.

Delicious in Dungeon

I’ve been watching Delicious in Dungeon, and what strikes me is how well it mixes tension with a surprisingly chill vibe. It’s become popular for its unique premise – cooking and eating monsters – but there’s a lot more depth to it than just that quirky idea.

Delicious in Dungeon centers around Laios and his companions as they venture into a dangerous dungeon to save his sister, Falin, from a Red Dragon. Despite being short on funds, they survive by hunting monsters and cooking them for food. While often light and humorous, the anime gradually becomes a thrilling adventure, ranking it among the best in the genre.

Berserk

Kentaro Miura’s Berserk is a hugely popular and critically acclaimed fantasy manga, often considered one of the best manga series ever made. Adapting such a beloved work is always a challenge, but the 1997 anime series is a well-done attempt with many memorable scenes.

This anime covers the ‘Golden Age Arc’ from the original manga, focusing on Guts as he joins the Band of the Hawk, a group of mercenaries. It explores his bond with their leader, Griffith, and the fates of the other key members. If you enjoy dark fantasy, Berserk is worth checking out. While it can be intense, the Golden Age Arc is a standout part of the story, and the anime effectively portrays Guts’ development during this period.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

When it comes to fantastic adventure anime, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is a standout. The anime, produced by the renowned studio Madhouse, has quickly become a favorite among anime lovers worldwide.

It’s no surprise this series is so popular. It’s visually stunning, deeply moving, and features characters you genuinely connect with. Right now, Frieren is setting the bar incredibly high for all future adventure anime.
