Why Jolyne Kujo Was The Last Big Shonen Heroine 26 Years Ago
Shonen manga, popular among young boys, often doesn’t have many well-developed female characters, and this is a frequent criticism, especially as more women become fans of the genre. However, some older shonen series were better at including strong female characters, and a prime example is Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean. This installment of the long-running Jojo series notably features a predominantly female main cast.
I have to say, Jolyne Kujo is just an incredible character! Throughout her series, she had so many awesome moments, and honestly, I think she showed some of the best growth of any Joestar. And she wasn’t just a well-developed character, she was a fantastic fighter too. Her Stand wasn’t the most overwhelmingly powerful – especially when you think about Stands like Star Platinum or The World – but she was so clever with how she used it, which really made her shine. Honestly, Jolyne felt like a real game-changer when she first came out. A female lead in JoJo was pretty revolutionary for the time, and it’s been amazing to see even more people discover her story now that it’s been adapted into an anime in 2021!
Assessing Weekly Shonen Jump’s Other Interesting Female Characters
Jolyne and Desscaras rank among the strongest female characters in Weekly Shonen Jump, but they aren’t the only memorable ones. It’s become much more frequent to see female protagonists in the magazine now, a trend that wasn’t common when Jolyne first appeared.
Popular manga like Dandadan, currently a top seller, showcases a strong female protagonist named Momo. Other series, such as One Piece, also include memorable female characters. Though not always the main characters, these women are impactful and help drive the story forward.
