SNES Games That Are Fun from the Start

The Super Nintendo is, in my opinion, one of the best video game consoles ever made. It had an incredible library of games – over 700 titles were released in the US alone! And a lot of those games are truly fantastic.

Back then, games rarely held your hand with tutorials. Instead, they immediately threw you into the gameplay, letting you learn as you went and have fun right away. These are some of the best SNES games that do just that – they let you jump in and start enjoying yourself from the moment you turn them on.

10. Contra 3: The Alien Wars

Running and Gunning

Contra 3: The Alien Wars immediately launched players into intense action. This classic Konami shooter was notoriously difficult, and players were always desperate to find the powerful spread-shot weapon. The game is also remembered for its bizarre and memorable first boss – a long-necked turtle – which was a truly impressive sight.

The original Contra was a standout action game for the NES, and its sequel on the SNES was even better. The extra processing power of the SNES allowed for improvements, and the game’s difficulty made it highly replayable.

9. Uniracers

One-Wheeled Wackiness

If you only try one unicycle racing game, make it Uniracers. It immediately feels fast-paced, and mastering the timing of your tricks is key to winning. The tracks are wonderfully strange, with lots of twists, turns, and even half-pipe sections where you need to perform flips.

Uniracers is a truly unique game that never became hugely popular, but it still holds up incredibly well and remains a blast to play. If you want a simple, fun SNES game you can pick up and play right away, it’s definitely worth trying.

8. Actraiser

Mana from Heaven

Actraiser was immediately captivating, from its dramatic, visually impressive descent onto the battlefield to the satisfying sword combat. While similar action games existed, Actraiser stood out with its incredibly smooth and responsive controls. What truly set it apart, though, was the unique blend of action gameplay with a light city-building simulation, adding a surprising level of depth and strategy.

As a big fan, I was so excited when Actraiser got sequels on both the SNES and PC, but honestly, they just didn’t capture the same magic as the original. The first game is still what everyone remembers, and it truly remains a classic for me!

7. Super Metroid

A Veritable Morphing Ball

Super Metroid is considered the original and best of its kind, a genre now known as ‘metroidvania.’ The game drops you onto the planet Zebes and lets you explore freely. While you’ll revisit areas often – that’s just how these games work – the feeling of discovering a strange, alien world with Samus Aran is incredibly exciting, especially when you play it for the first time.

As a huge fan, I totally get why Super Metroid is always on everyone’s ‘best games of all time’ lists – and why it basically created its own genre! It’s honestly one of the most fun games I’ve ever played, period.

6. Super Mario Kart

Plumbers Putting the Pedal to the Metal

Once you started playing Super Mario Kart, it was instantly addictive. The thrill of racing through courses like Bowser’s Castle – dodging lava, avoiding obstacles, and launching shells at opponents – remains incredibly enjoyable even now.

Playing against friends in the battle mode, trying to be the last one remaining, created a lot of funny and fun experiences. Even now, Super Mario Kart is a great game to play when you’re hanging out with old friends.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time

A True Cowabunga of a TIme

TMNT: Turtles in Time on the SNES was originally an arcade game, but the console version was improved with extra levels that fans were incredibly excited about. Because it was based on a popular arcade game, it’s a fantastic and instantly enjoyable beat-em-up.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward – it’s mostly punches, jumps, and kicks. But it was surprisingly satisfying to throw enemies towards the screen! Plus, the music is fantastic.

4. Star Fox

The Game That Gave Us Slippy Toad

When Star Fox first came out, it was a groundbreaking game visually, thanks to the Super FX Chip. This 3D rail shooter put players in control of Fox McCloud, leading his team against the villainous Andross, and quickly became popular. The fast-paced action, like performing barrel rolls and protecting your team from enemies, made Star Fox exciting throughout the entire game.

Though simple by today’s standards, Star Fox was a visual marvel on the SNES when it first came out and felt incredibly innovative. It remains a classic and is still celebrated as one of the best games ever made for the console.

3. Super Mario World

A Near-Pefect Adventure

Super Mario World, the defining game for the Super Nintendo, was packed with exciting new additions. It famously introduced Yoshi, the lovable green dinosaur, and brought in fresh power-ups like the cape that let Mario fly. The game was also full of hidden secrets, including pathways to secret levels in the Star World.

Super Mario games are almost always fun, but Super Mario World really takes things to the next level. It’s a truly timeless game that remains enjoyable no matter how many times you play it.

2. Mega Man X

A New Era for the Blue Bot

Capcom truly thrived during the Super Nintendo era, and the development of the Mega Man series, especially with the release of Mega Man X, stands out as a highlight. Mega Man X significantly increased the speed and agility of gameplay, introducing moves like dashing and wall-sliding. Beyond gaining abilities from defeated bosses, players also searched for armor upgrades to enhance X’s capabilities.

The original Mega Man games for the NES were always fun and challenging, and Mega Man X took those qualities to the next level. Luckily, the Mega Man Legacy Collections are now available, letting players enjoy the classic X games on today’s consoles.

1. Donkey Kong Country

That Funky Monkey

Donkey Kong Country immediately throws you into the action – you free your monkey companion from a barrel and then ride a rhino to charge through enemies, all within the first half-minute. The game maintains this fast pace and constant stream of surprises throughout. Whether you’re exploring peaceful underwater areas or racing through mine carts like in the Indiana Jones movies, Donkey Kong Country always has something fresh and enjoyable waiting for you.

The game was a stunning showcase of the SNES’s capabilities, largely due to the talented developers at Rare. It’s a truly wild and endlessly entertaining experience.
