How to Farm Nightmare Rift Bosses in Borderlands 4

In Borderlands 4: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, players can enter special areas called Nightmare Rifts. These rifts teleport you to challenging arenas where you’ll face incredibly tough bosses—some of the most dangerous in the game, excluding the Invincibles. This guide explains where and how to farm for Nightmare Rifts to appear. We’ll also include a table listing all 9 unique Legendary items that can be obtained by defeating any of the Nightmare Rift bosses.

Nightmare Rifts aren’t appearing very often right now, but the team at Gearbox plans to fix this in an upcoming update. When they do, the types of loot you can get and the best way to defeat the bosses won’t be affected.

How to Find Nightmare Rift Bosses in Borderlands 4

  • Head to Ellie’s Garage, the Fast Travel Station in the center of the Whispering Glacier.
  • Activate your vehicle and head up to the route in the west, and stick to the right.
  • Continue following west until you loop back around to Ellie’s Garage, and keep your eyes peeled on the left and right for red beams in the sky.
  • Nightmare Rifts are completely random, but since they spawn based on distance, you should be able to find one as you continue the loop across Ellie’s Garage.
  • When you do find a Nightmare Rift, you can interact with it to teleport to a boss arena.
  • The boss usually has a unique effect, like Elemental Eater.

Don’t be discouraged if you haven’t found a Nightmare Rift after playing for a while. Finding one is random, and there’s no waiting period, so just keep trying – you’ll eventually get lucky!

Fearstalker Jakobs Sniper Rifle Improbable – Critical Hits grant a Stack of Deduction that increases the next Non-Critical Hit Damage by +200% per Stack. Non-Critical Hits grant a Stack of Observation that increases the next Critical Hit Damage by +100% per Stack.
Ichor Maliwan Heavy Gun Ordnance Deihazard – Deals Incendiary and Corrosive Damage.
Kor Torgue Shotgun Full Belly – Detonating Stickies triggers a Nova. Nova Damage scales with the number of attached Stickies.
Configuration Siren Class Mod When Vex activates an Action Skill or Command Skill, it opens a Blood Rift for a duration. Maximum of 2 active Blood Rifts at a time. Blood Rifts rapidly fire Remnant Minions, dealing Kinetic Gun Damage based on her Current Weapon when spawned.
Gamer Rogue Class Mod Whenever C4SH Critically Hits an enemy with a Gun, Bleed that enemy. Whenever C4SH kills an enemy with Bleed with a Critically Hit, he gains a 7% Chance to spawn a Chaos Totem. While Windfall is active, double that Chance.
Phlebotomist Gravitar Class Mod While Harlowe’s Actrion Skill is active, dealing Gun Damage to an enemy has a chance to cause a Hemorrhage, dealing Kinetic Status Effect Damage based on Damage Dealt. Hemorrhage deals twice as much Damage to Bosses.
Reaparicion Exo-Soldier Class Mod Melee Damage has a chance to cause a Blade Storm for 5 seconds, dealing Kinetic Melee Damage based on Damage Dealt. Action Skill Melee Damage has double the chance. Up to 3 Blade Storms can be active at a time.
Tempest Forgeknight Class Mod Dealing Gun Damage grants Storm for 20 seconds, increasing Shock Damage, stacking up to 50 times. Activating a Forgeskill causes Elemental Bolts to strike random nearby enemies for 10 seconds, dealing Shock Skill Damage based on Maximum Shield Capacity.

While there are multiple Nightmare Rift bosses, they all share the same loot pool.
