A demo for the new Nintendo Switch game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, was released on the Nintendo eShop on March 25th. However, players are intentionally focusing on customizing their Mii characters instead of progressing through the game, hoping to extend the demo experience. With the full release of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream scheduled for April 16th, fans are eagerly counting down the days to play the latest life simulation game on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
The sequel to the popular 3DS game Tomodachi Life brings Nintendo’s Mii characters back to life. Players create and care for Miis on an island, customizing their clothes, food, and gifts, and even watching them find love. What makes Living the Dream unique compared to games like Animal Crossing or The Sims is its unpredictable and often bizarre humor. Some fans are even deliberately avoiding finishing the game’s demo to experience more of this strange and fun world.
How to Avoid the Infamous “Lobotomii” in the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Demo
Okay, so I was reading on Twitter – WeirdHumanBeing shared this, it’s wild! – that if you finish the demo tutorial for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, your Miis get put on, like, house arrest! Seriously, they just stay inside and nag you to buy the full game if you talk to them. But here’s the cool part: if you stop right before finishing the tutorial, they keep living their lives! They’ll still wander around, chat with each other, and play with gifts like normal. It’s a weird little trick, but it means you can keep enjoying your Miis even in the demo if you’re careful!
Okay, so I figured out a weird thing in the demo! If you make more than two Miis, your first Mii will start getting a little sad bubble over their head. Don’t click it! Seriously, don’t. It forces them to go to the ‘Where & Wear’ store and buy clothes, and after that, they just stay home no matter what. They’ll only want to talk about how awesome the full Living the Dream game is when it comes out on April 16th. It’s like they’re obsessed with shopping! I learned the hard way – gotta keep those Miis social!
To extend the demo for as long as possible, you have two choices: avoid creating a third Mii, or if you do create one, don’t click on the first Mii’s problem bubble. If you make a third Mii, the first one won’t leave their house on their own, but you can still move them outside to interact with the others and see some extra dialogue. However, once the clothing store is built, the demo will end.
The short length and limitations of the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream demo actually make sense. The fun of the game comes from watching your Mii characters interact, and letting players create too many characters or develop relationships too far in the demo would spoil the experience of the full game. Nintendo wants people to purchase the complete version, so they understandably held back some of the most exciting features. It’s still a bit frustrating that players can’t even create more Miis to play around with the customization options, even if those Miis couldn’t be added to the island until the full game is released. The Miitopia demo on Switch allowed unlimited Mii creation, but kept those extra characters in storage until the full game was purchased – a feature that would have been nice to see in the Tomodachi Life demo.
Although you can skip the clothing store, the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream demo is quite restricted. It only lets you have 3 Miis on your island, relationships don’t go beyond simple crushes, and there’s a limited number of problems to fix. However, the demo was effective – many players are choosing not to build the Where & Wear shop just to keep playing, which is a good sign. Based on what we know about the complete Living the Dream game, there’s a lot more to enjoy.
