As a Pokémon fan, I’m so excited for Pokémon Champions to launch on April 8th! It’s coming at a great time because the competitive scene for Scarlet and Violet is wrapping up – Season 41 starts April 1st and is the last one. I think Pokémon Champions is going to be huge, and everyone’s attention will be on it after the Scarlet and Violet season ends. It’s awesome that there will be new ways to battle, whether you’re a casual player or super competitive!
The release timing is noteworthy, but the connection between Pokemon Champions and Pokemon Legends: Z-A is particularly interesting. Pokemon Champions builds on the traditional, refined Pokemon battle system, whereas Pokemon Legends: Z-A tried a lot of new things. It introduced real-time battles, but also faced criticism for removing abilities, a feature many fans enjoyed.
Pokemon Abilities in Legends: Z-A and Champions
While a few Pokémon abilities still have an effect in Pokémon Legends: Z-A – like Mimikyu’s and those related to the Weather trio and their Primal forms – the game generally feels less strategic due to the overall removal of abilities. In fact, this change actually makes Aegislash less powerful than before.
Pokemon Legends: Arceus also left out Pokemon Abilities. These abilities, first appearing in the third generation of Pokemon games, are special traits that give Pokemon unique advantages during battles – like increasing stats, weakening opponents, changing the weather, or affecting which moves are used.
The upcoming release of Pokemon Champions is especially thrilling because it introduces new abilities alongside returning favorites. While Mega Emboar receives a less impressive ability, Mega Meganium and Mega Feraligatr will debut with completely new ones. Although not many details have been shared yet, this hints at a diverse range of abilities when the game launches in April. Fans are excited not only for the return of familiar abilities, but also for what’s new. In fact, it almost makes the lack of abilities in Pokemon Legends: Z-A feel worthwhile, as the anticipation for Pokemon Champions is now even greater.

New abilities open up fresh ways to play, and while Mold Breaker isn’t a game-changer for Mega Emboar, there might be something players haven’t discovered yet. The game, Pokemon Champions, is currently concentrating on Mega Evolution, so other battle features like Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing will be added later. Combining Mega Evolution with these new abilities seems to be enough to keep things balanced for now, and we might see even more abilities introduced as the game is updated.
It’s still unclear whether Pokemon Champions will be a hit with both casual and competitive players, as its developers hope. The game’s focus on grinding for Mega Stones might frustrate some players, and it will be interesting to see if the Battle Pass system becomes tiresome. However, Pokemon Champions is just as innovative as Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which is a good sign for the future of the Pokemon series. Like Pokemon Legends did with abilities, Pokemon Champions is taking risks with the battle system, and sometimes breaking from tradition is necessary.
Every Confirmed Ability in Pokemon Champions (So Far)
Although Mega Emboar’s Mold Breaker ability isn’t particularly impressive, the same isn’t true for Mega Meganium and Mega Feraligatr. Mega Feraligatr’s Dragonize ability gives its powerful physical attacks a boost, while Mega Meganium’s abilities are all enhanced as if the weather were permanently sunny. These are known as the abilities Mega Sol and Dragonize, respectively. Similarly, Mega Froslass gains Snow Warning and Mega Dragonite gets Multiscale.
- Mega Meganium: Mega Sol – Moves are boosted as if Harsh Sunlight was active (Solar Bear fires immediately, Synthesis is boosted, Weather Ball is boosted)
- Mega Feraligatr: Dragonize – Normal-type Moves are converted into Dragon-Type Moves, providing STAB and a power boost on moves like Double-Edge or Slash
- Mega Emboar: Mold Breaker – Emboar gets Mold Breaker, which means it ignores the opponent’s ability when attacking.
- Mega Froslass: Snow Warning – Summons hail when it enters battle
- Mega Dragonite: Multiscale – Reduces damage taken when at full HP
April 8 Will Be a Very Busy Day for Pokemon Fans
Even though Pokemon Champions is already introducing exciting new abilities, the competitive battling community often sees changes. It will be fascinating to watch how all players, from casual fans to competitive pros, adapt to the game, particularly before it’s used in the VGC this year. The new abilities, combined with gameplay experiences from Pokemon Legends: Z-A, should help players quickly understand and enjoy the game. The anticipation for its April 8th release is definitely justified.
I read TopMob’s first look at Pokemon Champions, and they hit the nail on the head. If you’re like me and you live for the battles in Pokemon, this game is definitely for you. But even if battling isn’t your main thing, don’t worry – the game does a good job of helping you learn and get into it. They mentioned some decisions might rub people the wrong way, but honestly, waiting for things and managing resources have always been part of Pokemon, so it’s not exactly a shock here.
