While Crimson Desert has been a big hit, its main storyline has received criticism, and Newman’s perspective could help explain the reasons why.

Crimson Desert provides players with plenty of activities, but many felt the game’s story wasn’t strong enough for an open-world RPG. The developers at Pearl Abyss have listened to this feedback. Crimson Desert Kliff Actor Talks Five-Year Recording Process

Alec Newman, an actor in the game Crimson Desert, recently discussed his five-year involvement with the project on the Skill Up podcast. He called it a consistently rewarding experience, though the development process was often unpredictable. Newman explained that recording didn’t truly begin in a substantial way until two years after he initially started. He described the experience as a “rollercoaster,” noting that the game’s direction seemed to evolve over time. He recalls asking the developers for a clearer overall story, as he initially only received individual character and faction details without a comprehensive narrative.

Newman shared that he played a key role in shaping the story of Crimson Desert. Once Pearl Abyss decided on the protagonist’s name, Kliff, Newman persistently advocated for his vision for the character and narrative. He explained he felt a strong responsibility as a developer working on this particular game, and he’s happy he insisted on his ideas.

There were a lot of different characters and groups, and I found myself constantly asking what the actual story was and what was going on.

It appears that changes in Pearl Abyss’s focus during development negatively impacted both the character of Kliff and the game’s story. According to writer Newman, the developers decided, after about two and a half years, to emphasize themes of family and connection. While they wanted Kliff to show more care for his companions, Newman pointed out that the character already possessed those traits, but the writing hadn’t reflected it. He feels Kliff was ultimately not given enough opportunities to express those feelings.

Pearl Abyss is quickly responding to player feedback with updates for Crimson Desert. In less than two weeks, they’ve already added a significant amount of new content. It’s been great to see such a fast reaction from the developers. While major story changes might not be planned, hopefully they’ll use what they’ve learned from player reactions to improve things in any future story expansions.
