The sentencing of Larry Harmon, founder of Helix, to a 3-year prison term and the forfeiture of over $700 million in assets serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of operating within the grey areas of this industry.

It’s noteworthy that a crypto mixer operator from Ohio has been imprisoned following a court decision. This event is significant because it’s part of the ongoing efforts by US law enforcement to prosecute crypto mixers, which are suspected of assisting money laundering, cyber attacks, and other criminal activities.

Helix Founder To Serve 3-Year Prison Sentence, Forfeit Over $700 Million

As an analyst reporting, I’m sharing news from the US Department of Justice (DOJ). In their official statement, it was declared that Larry Harmon, the creator and overseer of cryptocurrency mixer Helix, is now serving a prison term of three years.

In 2021, Larry Harmon admitted his guilt for conspiring to launder money illegally, as charged in an indictment related to his management of Helix, a platform used to wash approximately 354,468 Bitcoin (worth over $300 million) derived from drug trafficking. Moreover, this Ohio-based developer operated Grams, a darknet search engine that granted users access to illicit goods such as hacking tools, false documents, narcotics, and other prohibited items.

In partnership with Helix, Grams functioned on the dark web primarily for illegal drug transactions. A portion of these transactions, serving as commission and operational fees, were forwarded to Harmon. According to the Department of Justice, Harmon managed Helix from 2014 until 2017, choosing to close down the cryptocurrency blending service prior to his arrest in 2020.

As a crypto investor, I learned that on November 15, U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell in Washington D.C., handed down a sentence for Larry Harmon. He was ordered to serve three years behind bars, followed by another three years under supervision upon his release.

Initially, prosecutors wanted a six-year prison sentence for the 41-year-old defendant. However, the judge took into account Harmon’s assistance to law enforcement during the trial of Roman Sterlingov, the operator of crypto mixer Bitcoin Fog, and the early shutdown of the Helix mixer prior to his arrest. This cooperation earned him some leniency in sentencing.

Beyond serving the imposed prison term, the operator of the convicted crypto mixing service will also relinquish approximately $311.14 million in cash equivalents and assets, both physical and digital, worth more than $400 million.

Crypto Mixer Operators Under Fire

As a crypto investor, it’s striking to see that Larry Harmon has been sentenced to prison by US courts, making him the second mixer operator in a week to face such consequences. Remarkably, Bitcoin Fog’s operator was mandated on November 8 to serve a term of 12.5 years behind bars for overseeing what is considered the “longest-running Bitcoin money laundering service” that operated from 2011 to 2021.

However, all attention remains on the case of Tornado Cash co-founder and developer Roman Storm who is set to face trial in April 2025.

Authorities have brought forward four accusations against Storm, relating to the development and management of Tornado Cash, an operation allegedly involved in laundering over $1 billion. If found guilty, Storm faces a sentence of 45 years imprisonment. The case continues to spark debate within the crypto community, who argue that a software developer should not face prosecution for their creation’s use. This perspective has been reinforced by significant contributions towards a legal defense fund from influential figures such as Vitalik Buterin and the Uniswap DAO.
