Over the years, there have been many different actors portraying Batman in live-action films and shows, making it difficult to remember them all. The very first actor to bring the Dark Knight to life on screen was Lewis Wilson, who played Batman in a series of films throughout the 1940s, expanding the character’s story beyond the comic books.

Throughout the 20th century, actors such as Robert Lowery, Adam West, and Michael Keaton became iconic portrayals of Batman. Before James Gunn revealed his plans for a Batman-focused DC Universe, it’s worth remembering the actors who previously brought Gotham’s hero to life. Here’s a ranking of the best Batman performers.

10. Iain Glen

Titans (2019-2021)

From the beginning, the four-season show Titans sparked a lot of debate. It offered a dark and gritty take on the DC Universe, even compared to the films being released around the same time by Zack Snyder. A major point of contention was how the show portrayed Bruce Wayne, specifically whether he had killed the Joker after Jason Todd (Robin) was killed. However, Iain Glen delivered a compelling performance as a Bruce Wayne who was older and far more haunted than audiences were accustomed to.

Even without the Batman suit, Glen had a natural charisma perfect for the role. His voice effortlessly conveyed the character’s playboy billionaire persona. While opinions on the show’s choices may vary, for two seasons, Glen truly embodied Batman and provided the guidance the troubled Titans team clearly needed.

9. David Mazouz

Gotham (2014-2019)

Though Gotham initially focused on Jim Gordon’s fight against corruption as a young detective, David Mazouz’s portrayal of Bruce Wayne developed into a compelling version of Batman. He only appeared in full costume in the very last scene. However, during the show’s final 50 episodes, both Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne became central characters, demanding a lot more from Mazouz’s performance.

Honestly, what really struck me about David Mazouz’s performance as Bruce Wayne wasn’t just him – it was how incredibly well he played off of everyone around him. His chemistry with Sean Pertwee as Alfred, Camren Bicondova’s Catwoman, and Ben McKenzie’s Gordon was just fantastic, and that’s a huge part of why I think he deserves recognition. We hadn’t really seen this stage of Bruce’s life explored in detail live-action before, not since Batman Begins and glimpses in Batman: The Animated Series. Gotham really took the time to build out those formative years, even when the show understandably focused on villains like Penguin, Riddler, and all the different takes on the Joker. Mazouz made Bruce feel real and present, even when he wasn’t the main focus.

8. Adam West

Batman (1966-1968) & Batman: The Movie (1966)

The 1966 Batman television show made the superhero a nationwide phenomenon. While it was much more lighthearted and comedic than today’s Batman movies, it vividly captured the spirit of the comics from the 1950s and 60s. Adam West was the ideal Batman for that era. He portrayed a genuine crimefighter, and his dedication to playing the show’s humor with a straight face was remarkably innovative.

Even though the show’s quality declined in its third season, Adam West’s portrayal of Batman stayed consistently strong. He had a truly memorable voice and delivered his lines perfectly. After the original series ended, West continued to voice Batman in projects like The New Adventures of Batman and the animated films Batman: Return to the Caped Crusaders (2016) and Batman vs. Two-Face (2017). The idea for Batman vs. Two-Face actually came from a story that was originally cut from the 1960s series.

7. George Clooney

Batman & Robin (1997) & The Flash (2023)

Most people dislike Batman & Robin, and especially George Clooney’s performance as Batman. Clooney himself has often apologized for being in the film! However, despite its flaws, the movie is a wildly over-the-top and fun ride, and Clooney is actually a surprisingly good Batman. Yes, it’s famous for things like the Bat-Nipples and Bat-Credit Card, but Clooney manages to portray an older, weary Batman very well.

George Clooney’s portrayal of Batman is surprisingly heartwarming. This version of Bruce Wayne finally found peace with his past at the end of Batman Forever, allowing Clooney to bring a subtle sense of healing to the role. However, with age comes the fear of failing to protect those he cares about. The touching connection Clooney shares with Michael Gough as Alfred highlights this internal struggle. While Batman & Robin isn’t a well-regarded film, Clooney’s serious and thoughtful performance deserves another look.

Batwoman (2019)

Look, for a generation, Kevin Conroy was Batman. His voice defined the character, especially through Batman: The Animated Series and all those fantastic DCAU shows, and let’s not forget his incredible work on the Arkham games. It was a real treat to finally see him in the cape and cowl live-action, even if it was just for one episode of Batwoman. It was part of that big Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover on The CW, and it was…different. He played a broken, almost villainous Batman who needed a robotic suit to even stand. It wasn’t the heroic Batman we were used to, but Conroy absolutely committed to the role and brought everything he had to it. It was a memorable, if unusual, appearance from a true legend.

Despite only appearing on screen for five minutes, Kevin Conroy delivered an absolutely phenomenal performance as Batman. He completely embodied the character, from his voice to his movements, and this time, we were able to truly see the emotion in his eyes. It’s particularly poignant knowing he sadly passed away in 2022 after a courageous fight with cancer. He’s easily deserving of the top spot on most lists, and the fact that he ranks so highly here despite limited screen time speaks volumes about his talent. He was a groundbreaking actor and a true pioneer.

5. Val Kilmer

Batman Forever (1995)

Many fans see Batman Forever as the point where the popular, big-budget Batman movies started to decline. However, Val Kilmer brought a smooth and melancholic quality to the role of Batman. While the film was a more colorful and over-the-top take on the character compared to the earlier Tim Burton films, Kilmer’s portrayal was distinct. Let me tell you, Robert Pattinson’s Batman is a revelation. This first film shows incredible growth for his version of the character, and honestly, if he continues in the role, he could easily become the best Batman we’ve ever seen. He just commands the screen, and that voice! But it wasn’t just him – the chemistry between Pattinson and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon was a real highlight, surprisingly playful even amidst all the darkness. It’s a fantastic foundation for what could be a truly iconic run. We’ll get to see where it goes next in The Batman Part II, which, sadly, isn’t until October 2027.

Some might be surprised to see Michael Keaton’s Batman ranked here, but that really shows how incredibly high his standard was for the role. He truly defined the modern live-action Batman with his unique movements in the suit, his chilling voice, and his quirky take on Bruce Wayne. Memorable lines, fantastic villains, and moments like the poignant ending of Batman Returns are all forever linked to his portrayal. Everything about his Batman – from the Batmobile to the Batcave – felt instantly iconic.

The main flaw with this portrayal of the character is his tendency towards excessive violence. However, that doesn’t diminish the excellent work Michael Keaton did in his three films.
