As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has followed the adventures of these beloved characters for decades, I must say that the news of “What If…?” coming to an end is indeed disheartening. The show has been a breath of fresh air in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, offering us a peek into alternate realities and allowing our favorite heroes to shine in unexpected ways.
Following only three captivating seasons within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the intriguing anthology series “What If…?” is preparing to conclude its run. Launched in 2021, this animated show delved into the chaos of the Marvel Multiverse, but as the MCU readies for season 3 of “What If…?” in 2024, there’s a sense that things are drawing to a sudden close.
Stepping aside from the live-action stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the show “What If…?” entered as part of the growing lineup on Disney+. Similar animated series like “X-Men ’97”, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, and the postponed “Marvel Zombies” function as spin-offs for “What If…?”, but when it comes to this show that delves into different realities, there are only eight episodes remaining.
What If…? Season 3 Is The End of the Road
In contrast to the primary storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “What If…?” explores alternate realities and has brought back beloved characters like Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Hemsworth, Hayley Atwell, Elizabeth Olsen, and Chadwick Boseman from live-action. The third season of “What If…?” continues to weave more Multiverse stories under the watchful eye of Jeffrey Wright’s character, Uatu, who is also known as the Watcher.
Key moments in the third season of What If…? include the comeback of White Vision from WandaVision, the much-anticipated resurfacing of Moon Knight, and Alison Sealy-Smith reprising her role as Storm from X-Men: The Animated Series in X-Men ’97. The trailer’s peak moment features Storm wielding Mjölnir. With Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019, the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU signifies a fresh chapter for the franchise.
In the same vein as season 2 of “What If…?” introduced Kahhori as a fresh hero poised to enter live-action, Natasha Lyonne joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time in season 3, taking on the role of a new character named Byrdie. There are whispers that Uatu, played by Wright, could have a significant impact on the franchise’s upcoming storylines, while Captain Carter appears to be a perfect fit for the assumed reconstruction of Battleworld in “Avengers: Secret Wars”. This follows Hayley Atwell portraying a version of the character in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”.
So far, “What If…?” has primarily told standalone stories across a season, concluding with a grand multiversal team-up. As we approach its finale, there’s anticipation for an explosive ending that could potentially pave the way for a future live-action MCU project. Given the upcoming two Avengers films, it seems strategic to begin planting these seeds now.
The MCU Is Missing Out On the Potential of What If…? Season 4
If Sealy-Smith may not end up as Storm in the upcoming X-Men reboot, her appearance in What If…? leaves fans excited about the possibilities for future seasons of the series. Just like Deadpool & Wolverine brought Channing Tatum’s Gambit and Wesley Snipes’ Blade to life, season 4 of What If…? could introduce well-known actors like Nicolas Cage, Ben Affleck, or Drew Goddard lending their voices to beloved characters such as Ghost Rider, Daredevil, or Spider-Man. Fans can envision a Ghost Rider episode featuring Nicholas Cage, an animated Daredevil voiced by Ben Affleck, or a Spider-Man-focused episode that fulfills Drew Goddard’s unrealized Sinister Six movie concept.
As a passionate gamer, let me tell you, I’m super hyped about the forthcoming appearances of The Fantastic Four and X-Men! What makes it even more exciting is the array of characters that could star in their very own “What If…?” tales. You know, scenarios like Professor X turning into Juggernaut (Issue #13) or Dazzler announcing herself as Galactus’ herald (Issue #33), which we might never witness in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. But imagine, just for a moment, Wolverine squaring off against Conan the Barbarian (Issue #16), Frank Castle transforming into Venom (Issue #44), or Ben Grimm morphing into a Hulk-like mutant (Issue #37). These are stories we’re sadly missing out on, my friends!
It appears that the reason for the conclusion of “What If…?” isn’t explicitly stated, but it seems it was intended as a three-act tale, potentially setting the stage for additional ventures. This is evident from the creation of “Marvel Zombies,” which stemmed from season 1’s “What If… Zombies?!” In an interview with The Official Marvel Podcast in July 2024, executive producer Brad Winderbaum mentioned that season 3 seems to wrap up a trilogy.
As a gamer, diving into the third season felt like venturing deeper into the multiverse than ever before. It introduced characters I never saw coming, making each episode unpredictable and thrilling. The conclusion was, in my opinion, heart-wrenchingly emotional yet satisfyingly fulfilling for our beloved Watcher.
Despite a brief hint of the Watchers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to fully exploit their potential. As new cosmic characters like Eternity from Thor: Love and Thunder and Death in Agatha All Along are being introduced, it seems that the Watchers (specifically Uatu) are poised to become significant figures.
In the third season of “What If…?”, the show is bringing together a new Avengers team consisting of Sam Wilson, Shang-Chi, and Monica Rambeau, which aligns with potential members for the upcoming New Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although “What If…?” may be concluding in its traditional format, there’s a possibility that it could carry on exploring some of its unique concepts through spin-offs such as “Marvel Zombies”. By presenting ideas that might be too unconventional for live-action, “What If…?” has at least functioned as a trial platform for unusual notions. Given that there’s already been a Christmas episode, it could be interesting to revisit the “What If…?” format occasionally for special episodes.
Even though some may find the conclusion of “What If…?” disappointing, it’s worth noting that this is the only Disney+ series to be commissioned for three seasons. Compared to most Marvel shows which are usually limited to a single season, even the highly praised “Loki” doesn’t seem likely to return for a third. Given that “Secret Wars” is predicted to dismantle the Multiverse and conclude the current Multiverse Saga, leading into the rumored ‘Mutant Saga’, it seems logical that “What If…?” is drawing to a close. Regrettably, we never got to witness Wolverine ruling as Lord of Vampires (as depicted in issue #24 of “What If…”), and even the Watcher remains unaware of what lies ahead for this series.
