A Sims 4 fan has created a useful guide listing all the ways your Sims can meet their demise. With all game expansions, there are nearly 40 different ways Sims can die – offering players creative (and sometimes morbid) options, or a way to manage their Sim neighborhoods. The guide also includes tips on how to prevent those unfortunate events.
Death has always been a part of The Sims games, but it wasn’t always simple to cause. While later games included full life cycles and Sims dying of old age, the original Sims from 2000 only featured babies, kids, and adults. If you wanted to get rid of a Sim back then, you typically had to trap them in a room without a way out or essential items, remove the ladder from their pool, or, if you had certain expansion packs, host a dangerous indoor fireworks display.

It’s become surprisingly easy for Sims to die in the game, and one player created a helpful chart listing all the ways it can happen. Shared on Reddit by fluffhq, there are now 37 different causes of death in The Sims 4, with 11 available even without any expansion packs. The base game includes classic Sims deaths like starvation, drowning, electrocution, and dying of old age, but also more unusual ways to go, such as overexertion, falling meteors, hungry cowplants, and death from extreme emotions.
Players who haven’t explored the expansion packs for The Sims 4 might be surprised by all the new ways their Sims can meet their end. The deadliest expansion is definitely Seasons, introducing four ways to die – from accidental lightning strikes and weather exposure to receiving a deadly flower as a gift. Four other expansions add two new deaths each, like upsetting the animals in Cottage Living or suffering mishaps with vending machines and rock climbing in Snowy Escape. Interestingly, even the 2024 Life & Death expansion, focused on death and the afterlife, only has one unique way to kill a Sim: by mistreating a pet crow.
As a huge Sims player, I’ve noticed some deaths are really specific to certain expansions, and honestly, they’re a bit wild! Like, if you’re playing with vampires, they’ll burst into flames if they run out of energy in the sun – that won’t happen to my regular Sims! Fairies can also just… fizzle out if they use up all their emotional energy, and spellcasters can literally explode if they overdo the magic. It’s dramatic, for sure. And then there are the Servos from Discover University – they’re robots, so they don’t die exactly, but if you let their energy drain completely, they just… melt down. You gotta keep them maintained, or it’s game over for your robotic friend!
This guide also explains how ghosts act in The Sims 4, depending on how their Sims died. Some ghosts are quite funny – those killed by animals might wear hamster pajamas or even have their killer’s head appear on their ghostly body! While it can be amusing to see Sims die in strange ways, players should protect their favorite Sims from dangerous ghosts. These ghosts can spread deadly mold, cause fires or lightning strikes, or make living Sims dangerously cold or hot, potentially leading to more ghostly deaths.
