Dragon Ball: 10 Best Sword Users, Ranked

While Dragon Ball is famous for its martial arts, creator Akira Toriyama often included weapons too. In the beginning, Goku frequently used his Power Pole alongside his hand-to-hand combat. Swords aren’t a major part of Dragon Ball, but they always stand out when they do appear.

Throughout the Dragon Ball series, characters like Future Trunks, Vegito, and Gohan have demonstrated impressive swordsmanship. While swords aren’t as powerful as energy attacks, transformations, or even basic fighting, the best sword users in Dragon Ball still play a significant role.

10. Tapion

Brave Sword

It’s difficult to say exactly how powerful Tapion is because he doesn’t get a chance to truly fight in Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon. However, everything points to him being an incredibly skilled warrior and swordsman – he’d need to be to contain Hirudegarn. The film claims his Brave Sword was a gift from the gods, and he ultimately passes it on to Trunks.

The opening sequence of Dragon Ball GT features Trunks wielding the Brave Sword, hinting that the events of Wrath of the Dragon are considered part of the anime’s official storyline. While Tapion’s sword doesn’t see much action, it—along with his Ocarina—seems to be Dragon Ball‘s take on the character Link and his items from The Legend of Zelda. This suggests Tapion is a skilled fighter with a blade, even if he doesn’t use it often.

9. Dabura

Darkness Sword

Dabura’s most recognizable weapon is the Darkness Sword, which he relies on during battles as a final option. We see this in his fight with Gohan – though Gohan does manage to break the sword, it requires a great deal of strength and effort.

In a possible future, Trunks battles Dabura with swords. Even though Trunks has the powerful Z-Sword, Dabura, using his Darkness Sword, is a skilled enough fighter to hold his own. Dabura was once the king of the Demon Realm and a capable swordsman, but ultimately he isn’t strong enough to defeat a Saiyan when it matters most.

8. Tamagami One

Tamagami Sword

In Dragon Ball DAIMA, Tamagami One is established as the most powerful of the three Tamagami brothers. The series directly confirms he surpasses Dabura in strength, making him stronger than Super Perfect Cell and comparable to, or even slightly stronger than, Fat Buu. Ultimately, Majin Duu defeats Tamagami One, but only after a fierce battle.

Despite being a relatively minor character, Tamagami One is powerful enough to fight alongside Super Saiyan 4 Goku in the battle against Gomah. He’s incredibly skilled with his signature weapon, the Tamagami Sword, and seems to use it without much effort. Because he was more powerful than Dabura, he’s considered the strongest swordsman in the Demon Realm among officially recognized characters.

7. Janemba

Dimension Sword

Janemba is considered the most powerful villain in the non-canonical Dragon Ball Z films, exceeding even Super Buu in strength. In his climactic fight with Super Saiyan 3 Goku, Super Janemba seriously injures Goku with his Dimension Sword. Goku would have been defeated if Vegeta hadn’t intervened to help his longtime rival.

The Dimension Sword is a remarkably powerful weapon, even though it was destroyed in the battle between Super Janemba and Super Saiyan 3 Goku and Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta. Its ability to cut through dimensions makes it incredibly dangerous, and the fact that Janemba nearly defeated Goku with it highlights his skill as a swordsman.

6. Goku Black

Violent Fierce God Slicer

Goku Black’s Violent Fierce God Slicer is an energy blade he creates from his own power. In the Dragon Ball Super anime, he uses this technique while fighting Vegeta, even managing to wound him with the energy sword.

Goku Black stands out from most martial artists because he frequently forms weapons using his energy, or Ki. He can create blades like the Violent Fierce God Slicer and the Sickle of Sorrow, and even enhance his Ki sword into the powerful Azure Dragon Sword Model Energy Blade. While Base Zamasu typically fights with Spirit Swords, possessing Goku’s body allows him to combine Saiyan Ki with sword fighting, making him an incredibly dangerous opponent.

5. Gohan

Training Sword & Z-Sword

I’ve always known Gohan as someone skilled with a blade, even though he doesn’t rely on weapons much. I remember when he was training for the battles against Nappa and Vegeta, Piccolo gave him a wooden sword to practice with while they were out in the wilderness, helping him learn to survive. Eventually, Gohan moved past the sword as Piccolo focused on teaching him proper martial arts, but even then, he was incredibly strong – I heard stories about him actually cutting off a Tyrannosaurus Rex’s tail repeatedly just to get some meat!

During the fight against Majin Buu, Gohan travels to the Sacred World of the Kai and pulls out the Z-Sword. Even with just a few hours of practice, he becomes incredibly powerful. By the time Goku reaches him, Gohan is a skilled swordsman. Although he eventually breaks the Z-Sword while training against a tough material, he’d become proficient enough with it to be a real threat to Buu.

4. Vegito

Spirit Sword

Vegito hasn’t technically won a battle, but he’s completely dominated his two opponents in both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. In DBZ, he impressively uses a Ki-based energy sword, the Spirit Sword, against Buuhan. He even cuts off one of Buuhan’s antennae, anticipating that Buu will try to use it to absorb him.

Despite the risks, Vegito enjoys toying with his opponents, easily overwhelming them with powerful attacks – he even sliced Buu to pieces. Later, in Dragon Ball Super, Vegito brutally defeated Fused Zamasu, cutting off his hands and relentlessly attacking him with a spirit sword. Vegito’s main limitation is that the Potara earrings can’t maintain his immense power for very long. However, without time constraints, his Spirit Sword could quickly defeat any foe.

3. Fu

Time Cutter

Fu is a major villain in both Super Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and he’s one of the most powerful demons in the entire Dragon Ball universe – a real danger to everything. His main weapon is the Time Cutter, a sword that lets him steal energy from opponents. It’s so powerful, he can even create black holes just by swinging it.

Fu can create an energy blade in addition to his Time Cutter, allowing him to fight with two weapons. He’s incredibly powerful, demonstrated by his ability to fight evenly with Ultra Instinct Goku and hold off several versions of both Vegito and Gogeta simultaneously. Even without his energy blade, Fu remains a formidable opponent.

2. Yajirobe

Yajirobe’s Katana

While Yajirobe isn’t as strong as the heroes in Dragon Ball Super, he’s earned a lot of respect for his skills with a sword in the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. He first showed his power by instantly defeating one of King Piccolo’s children with a single swing – and then he even ate it!

During the Saiyan Saga, Yajirobe unexpectedly became a key player by cutting off Vegeta’s tail while he was in his Great Ape form. He later used his sword again, this time to cut Vegeta’s back during his fight with Gohan and Krillin. While he hasn’t been prominently featured since, Yajirobe’s actions are enough to establish him as one of the most skilled swordsmen in the entire Dragon Ball series.

1. Future Trunks

Trunks’ Sword, Z-Sword, & Sword of Hope

While Yajirobe was a skilled swordsman early on, Future Trunks is widely considered the best in the entire Dragon Ball series. Trunks is incredibly effective with his weapons. He famously defeated Mecha Frieza with a single, swift strike, quickly finishing off an enemy that gave Goku a tough fight. Although his sword breaks during his battle with Androids 17 and 18, he obtains a new one before the events of Dragon Ball Super.

Trunks possesses the Z-Sword in his future, which he used to defeat Dabura in a duel. He later unlocks Super Saiyan Rage and channels the energy of the remaining people in his timeline to upgrade the Z-Sword into the Sword of Hope, a devastating attack capable of cutting Fused Zamasu in half. Even though Zamasu was immortal, Trunks’ skill with a blade was so exceptional that he could have defeated him if Zamasu were vulnerable.
