Video Game Series Officially Returning In 2027

It’s early days to be talking about 2027, but we’re already seeing exciting previews of games planned for 2026 and later. Many games don’t have firm release dates yet, meaning they could arrive in 2026, 2027, or even further down the line.

It’s tempting to guess about future games, but this list focuses on titles with confirmed 2027 release dates. Many of these are exciting revivals of beloved franchises that haven’t seen a new installment in years – even decades, like Mega Man: Dual Override and Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish. Let’s explore what makes these games so noteworthy.

Mega Man: Dual Override

The Blue Bomber Returns To 2D

The original Mega Man series started in 1987 with the NES. New main games were released consistently until 1996, when Mega Man 8 came out in Japan for the PlayStation 1. After a significant pause, the Blue Bomber returned in 2008 with Mega Man 9, a game designed to look and feel like the classic NES titles. A sequel followed in 2010. Another long wait followed until Mega Man 11 launched in 2018, offering a more updated 2D experience. Now, Mega Man: Dual Override is scheduled for release in 2027.

Although a direct sequel hasn’t been announced, Mega Man: Dual Override feels like a classic Mega Man game, featuring power-ups, side-scrolling levels, and a distinctive visual style. The single trailer released so far has already generated a lot of excitement among fans. The title suggests a new gameplay element, possibly allowing players to switch between characters during a game or even offering a cooperative mode. Capcom is expected to share more details about this long-awaited installment soon.

Pokemon Winds/Waves

Under The Sea

I still remember when Pokemon Red and Pokemon Green first came out in Japan back in 1996 – it was incredible! We in North America got Pokemon Red and Blue in 1998, and they were a massive phenomenon. Since then, the Pokemon series has just kept going and going with new games and spin-offs, so we fans always have something to play. But honestly, the wait for a really great new generation felt tougher than usual with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in 2022. They had a lot of performance problems on the Switch, which was a real disappointment.

Game Freak and Nintendo recently revealed the long-awaited Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves with a short trailer. These games mark the start of the tenth generation of Pokemon, and the new region appears to be a tropical paradise, similar to the Hawaii-inspired Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. So far, we’ve met the three new starter Pokemon: Browt, Gecqua, and Pombon. The trailer didn’t show any battles or other new Pokemon, but it hinted that the ocean will be a key part of the gameplay. It’s still unclear how this will work on the upcoming Switch 2 console.

Tomb Raider: Catalyst

A Return To The 90s

The original Tomb Raider, released in 1996 for PlayStation and Sega Saturn, was a hugely popular action-adventure game. Its protagonist, Lara Croft, became a cultural icon of the 1990s, and the series continued with several sequels. While the last major installment, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, came out in 2018 (excluding various game collections), fans won’t have to wait until 2027 for a new experience. A full remake of the first game, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, is scheduled to launch in 2026.

While remakes can be fun, Tomb Raider: Catalyst represents a truly fresh start for the series. We haven’t seen much of it yet, but the initial trailer showed Lara Croft battling enemies in a tomb, equipped with her signature dual pistols and a new grappling hook. The trailer concludes with Lara surveying a vast and expansive world. Because this game was revealed alongside the remake, it’s possible they’re connected, though that remains speculation.

Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons

Thanks, Baldur’s Gate 3

  • Developer: Invoke Studios
  • Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
  • Planned Release: 2027
  • Planned Systems: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S

Originally created as a tabletop game in 1974, Dungeons & Dragons has had a huge impact on the gaming world, inspiring countless titles like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Beyond updated versions of the core rulebooks, Dungeons & Dragons has also been adapted into video games, though many haven’t been very well-received. However, the 2023 release, Baldur’s Gate 3, is widely considered one of the greatest role-playing games ever made. Its success could lead to a new era where Hasbro licenses the Dungeons & Dragons property to more developers, potentially resulting in a wave of high-quality RPGs.

One upcoming game is Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, which was briefly shown at The Game Awards in 2025. The reveal was a cinematic trailer, with no actual gameplay footage. We know the game will star a female warlock battling dark forces, and that gameplay will likely be revealed in Summer 2026, with the full game launching in 2027. Players can expect to see more at an event like Summer Game Fest, also hosted by Geoff Keighley.

Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish

Fighting Demons Together

  • Developer: Teyon
  • Publisher: Nacon
  • Planned Release: Q3 2027
  • Planned Systems: PC and Xbox Series X/S

Hunter: The Reckoning is a tabletop role-playing game that started in 1999. It’s set in our world, but with hidden supernatural creatures, and players take on the role of hunters who track them down. The game is part of a bigger shared universe called World of Darkness, which also includes the popular Vampire: The Masquerade. The first video game based on Hunter: The Reckoning came out in 2002, followed by two sequels: Wayward and Redeemer. After a long gap, a new game, Hunter: The Reckoning – The Beast of Glenkildove, was released on Steam in 2025, though it’s a simple text-based adventure.

For many fans, the most exciting announcement is Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish. Developed by Teyon, the studio behind the well-received RoboCop: Rogue City, it’s slated for release on PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2027. The recent cinematic trailer depicted hunters pursuing a vampire in New York City, concluding with a glimpse of actual gameplay showing various environments like city streets, rural areas, and shadowy corridors. Unlike the top-down perspective of the original Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube games, this new installment appears to be first-person, and it’s definitely a game worth checking out.
