As a seasoned traveler and RPG enthusiast, I must say that each of these cities has left an indelible mark on my gaming journey. From the gritty streets of Berlin in Shadow Run to the futuristic Neon in Starfield, each city offers a unique blend of adventure, mystery, and character development.
Roleplaying games, regardless of whether they feature dragons, knights, or friends banding together to overcome deities, are fundamentally fantasy experiences. In these games, players don’t just use their characters as tools for shooting and killing, but rather, they step into an alternate reality where the rules might be distinct and the inhabitants may seem strange, yet, in essence, it remains a world that reflects our own.
This is why sci-fi titles that use roleplaying elements are so fascinating. The mirror to our world isn’t so much a mirror as a portent. This is how things could go. This is how things might go if we go wrong, or this is how things might go if we keep down the same path we’re on. Whether a warning, a dream, or an utterly alien interpretation of modern society, many futuristic settings exemplify their message to the present through their cities. These RPGs have excellent futuristic cities with personalities of their own and unique stories to tell.
7. Mass Effect
The Citadel Is A Marvel Of Worldbuilding
As a gamer, let me tell you about an amazing feeling I had exploring the sprawling metropolis in BioWare’s original Mass Effect, particularly the Citadel. Despite the fact that players could only visit a few hub areas within the game, the architectural scale and detail of this city made it feel like a towering behemoth.
Each unenclosed part of the Citadel offers vistas filled with bustling living quarters or expansive artificial woodlands in the horizon, subtly hinting to players that this region represents a harmonious megastructure embodying galactic culture at its finest.
6. Outer Worlds
Byzantium Is A Lush, Vibrant Crown Jewel
In the game “The Outer Worlds”, Byzantium was undeniably worthy of greater focus, yet it remained one of the most captivating and elegantly designed locales for gamers to discover. This grand capital city truly encapsulates the essence of the Halcyon ruling class’s attributes.
Marveling at the extraordinary skies, the distinctive blend of art deco and retro-futuristic architecture, even a short sojourn in this tumultuous city will undoubtedly linger in one’s memory.
5. Cyberpunk 2077
Night City Has A Life Of Its Own
One aspect that captivates players about Night City is its authenticity. Real urban designers were involved in shaping its layout, which gives each neon-lit alleyway and thoroughfare a distinct character.
In my perspective, Night City might seem tantalizing with its dazzling holograms and stylish veneer, but beneath that glossy exterior lies a city that’s dark, gritty, and perhaps a cautionary tale for many. Yet, much like fish drawn to a gleaming lure, the alluring lights of this urban jungle still hold an irresistible charm for us, just as the characters in Cyberpunk are captivated, unwittingly steering towards their own peril.
4. Final Fantasy 7
Midgar Is One Of The Most Iconic Settings Ever
As fans anticipate the release of the final installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth series, they can delve into two games to discover one of the most distinctive cities ever featured in a video game. Midgar stands out as a gritty industrial metropolis with few counterparts.
As a gamer, navigating this concrete jungle ruled by corporate overlords feels like an epic challenge. Yet, my comrades, Cloud and his crew, strive tirelessly for a world where overconsumption doesn’t lead to our impending downfall. This city serves as the ultimate contrast to their vision of freedom.
3. Shadow Run: Dragonfall
Berlin Is Run Down But Infinitely Charming
A fantastic title not just as a CRPG but a tabletop game as well, the Shadow Run series is one of the best takes on Urban Fantasy as a genre that players can experience today, and the stable anarchy ‘Flux State’ of Berlin is reflective of this.
In a nutshell, Berlin is a vibrant blend of diverse cultures, where trolls, orcs, elves, and even doctors with cutting-edge technology coexist. They walk the same streets, frequent the same coffee shops, and it’s a place teeming with magic and innovation that warrants much more recognition.
2. Colony Ship: A Post-Earth Role Playing Game
The Decaying Cities Of This Game Are Fantastic
- Platforms: PC
- Released: 23 January 2020
- Developers: Iron Tower Studios
- Genre: RPG
Among the top choices for blending sci-fi aspects into the CRPG genre, the deteriorating urban landscapes and central points in Colony Ship serve as a grim and utilitarian backdrop, underscoring the gravity of the player’s predicament.
Onboard the Colony Ship, there’s scarcely a hug or a joyous conclusion, and the worn-out wires, grime-streaked puddles, and an overall sense of melancholy create an atmosphere where one can never forget the harsh reality.
1. Starfield
Cities Like Neon Have Lots Of Personality
Bethesda’s newest open-world game might take on too much in certain parts, however, it truly excels in the meticulously designed environments of the more tranquil planets found across the galaxy.
Neon hides numerous mysteries within its shiny surface, making it an ideal setting for a character to delve into shadier assignments, molding themselves into a renowned underworld broker, or merely getting lost in the dazzling spectacle of this perpetually lively metropolis.
