MOUSE: P.I. For Hire Has the Greatest Resident Evil 2 Easter Egg of All Time

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is packed with hidden references, or ‘Easter eggs,’ that span decades of entertainment – from old cartoons to today’s TV shows, movies, and video games. However, the game’s Easter egg referencing Resident Evil 2 is exceptionally detailed and prominent, overshadowing all the others. While Easter eggs are a long-standing tradition in gaming, and MOUSE: P.I. For Hire continues that tradition, even the original Resident Evil game can’t compare to the depth of this particular homage.

Minor Spoilers Ahead for MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Resident Evil Requiem

As a huge Resident Evil fan, I’ve been absolutely loving all the hidden details in Resident Evil Requiem! Seriously, the developers packed it with Easter eggs. Some are pretty obvious, like the little toy mansion and train in the orphanage – they’re a clear nod to the first game and Resident Evil Zero. But others are seriously sneaky! You need tools like a free cam to even spot them, like Grace researching the Dulvey Incident from Resident Evil 7 in the hotel. And the little details? Amazing! There’s a liquor bottle in the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center labeled ‘AVERNICO’ – a clear reference to Code: Veronica, I think – and Emily is even reading a braille version of ‘Village of Shadows’ from Resident Evil Village. It just proves how good Resident Evil is at these kinds of things, and honestly, Mouse P.I. For Hire is giving it a real run for its money with all the secrets it’s hiding!

From RCPD to That Alligator

It’s hard to see the white on white in this screenshot, but that says “Welcome Leon.”

In the beginning of MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, players visit the Mouseburg police department. While the department isn’t a direct nod to the iconic Raccoon City Police Department from Resident Evil 2, exploring it evokes a similar feeling to the dilapidated RCPD seen in RE Requiem – there’s a shared sense of structure, even though Mouseburg’s station is still functioning. The connection is cemented at the level’s end with a “Welcome Leon” sign, clearly referencing the RCPD and Leon Kennedy’s experiences within it in RE Requiem.

Many Easter eggs simply offer a quick reference, but this one goes further. The way the game, MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, is designed feels like a 1930s version of Raccoon City from the Resident Evil series. Players start at the Mouseburg police department and then travel through a subway – a clear reference to Resident Evil 3. However, the layout of Raccoon City is consistent throughout the games. Players will recognize that the subway connects to the sewers, an area featured in both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, as well as their remakes.

The incredibly memorable giant alligator chase sequence appears exclusively in Resident Evil 2. After navigating the subway and sewers, players controlling Leon or Ada are surprised by a massive alligator…that’s armed with a gun! Adding a firearm to this already over-the-top creature is a brilliantly funny touch.

From start to finish, playing MOUSE: P.I. For Hire feels remarkably similar to the Resident Evil 2 remake, especially moments like when the police station starts to resemble RCPD and during the gator battle. This really highlights how well the game uses hidden references and Easter eggs.
