The story of One Piece started with a simple pirate adventure, and at first, the idea of gods didn’t exist in that world. That changed with the Skypiea arc, where fans met Enel, a character who believed he was a god above everyone else. As the One Piece universe grew, the true gods – the Celestial Dragons – were revealed. Their leader, Nerona Imu, secretly rules the entire world. Now, these gods are central to the story. Twenty-four years after Enel appeared, the creator Oda introduced Nerona Imu, the ultimate power, who established the World Government 800 years ago after defeating Joy Boy and the Ancient Kingdom.
How Eiichiro Oda Foreshadowed The King Of The World With Enel 24 Years Ago
For about 24 years, the world of One Piece has hinted at the existence of Nerona Imu. Though Imu wasn’t directly named, the character Enel, from the Skypiea arc, foreshadowed Imu’s traits. Initially, the title of ‘God’ belonged only to Skypiea’s ruler, but Enel took the title to heart, genuinely believing he was a deity. Using the power of the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, he acted like a god, punishing the winged people he ruled and enslaving many Skypieans in his attempt to dominate the world.
Enel treated the Skypieans with utter contempt, and Oda brilliantly highlighted this by contrasting him with Luffy, who the enslaved people came to see as their savior – a god who freed them from Enel’s rule. Now, more than 20 years later, Oda is creating a similar dynamic by pitting the fully awakened ‘Sun God’ (Luffy) against the world’s true God, Nerona Imu, who shares many of Enel’s characteristics.
Nerona Imu Officially Ascends As The God In The Final Saga
After eight years of mystery, One Piece Chapter 1179 finally revealed the true form of the World Government’s leader, Saint Nerona Imu. Following the defeat of the Holy Knights and realizing the danger Luffy and others pose, Imu defied the Five Elders and traveled to Elbaph. As soon as he arrived, it was clear that his power and presence inspired immense fear, and his abilities seem to surpass even the strongest emperors, the Yonko.
Allow Mu to show thee the dominance of a God! — Imu, Chapter 1149
In the world of One Piece, the Celestial Dragons all consider themselves gods. This belief stems from their ancestry – they are descended from the twenty kings who originally fought against the Ancient Kingdom and Joy Boy eight hundred years ago. After Joy Boy’s defeat, these kings formed the World Government, and their descendants became the Celestial Dragons. At the very top of this group is Nerona Imu, effectively the true god of the One Piece world, standing above everyone else. His immense power, derived from a unique and ancient Devil Fruit, reinforces this godly status. Furthermore, his immortality, achieved through the Perennial Youth Surgery, adds to his seemingly divine presence.

Breaking Down Imu’s Devil Powers In The Warland
In chapter 1179, Nerona Imu arrived on Elbaph and instantly activated the power of their Devil Fruit. This allowed Imu to transform into a demonic being, taking on a hybrid form with large horns, wings, tanned skin, and ash-white hair. They also manifested circular, black clouds containing eyes, and wielded a Naginata. Imu released immense Haki, and a powerful, evil aura spread across Elbaph, seemingly awakening the island itself – a clear sign of Devil Fruit Awakening.
Starting with chapter 1180, Imu’s already immense power will increase dramatically, revealing the full extent of their godlike abilities and solidifying their importance to the story’s future.
The Role Of Nerona Imu As The Ruler of the World Post-Elbaph
It’s almost certain that Nerona Imu won’t be defeated during the Elbaph arc of One Piece. Instead, Imu is expected to demonstrate overwhelming power, easily defeating Luffy, Loki, and others. It’s too soon in the story for the main villain to be taken down. Imu and the World Government are gearing up for a massive war, which will likely start after the events on Elbaph. After this arc, Imu’s existence may become public knowledge, triggering the large-scale conflict Eiichiro Oda has hinted at – a war involving the Revolutionary Army, the Yonko, the Marines, and, most importantly, the Straw Hat Pirates.
From now on, Imu will be the main villain of the story, establishing themself as the all-powerful ruler of the world. Luffy will eventually have to defeat Imu, just as he defeated Enel in Skypiea years ago, and free everyone. By doing so, he will finally keep a promise made 800 years ago to those connected to the ‘D’ and the people of the Ancient Kingdom.
One Piece chapter 1180 will be available to read on Manga Plus on April 19, 2026, at 11 a.m. EST.
