Fast forward almost 20 years, and Hibito has become a fully trained astronaut, while Mutta hasn’t made much progress. When Hibito succeeds, Mutta receives an invitation to join astronaut training, giving him a second chance to pursue his own long-held ambition.

Forty-six volumes is a pretty good run for any manga, but it doesn’t quite compare to some of the really long-running series. For example, Golgo 13 had an incredible 220 volumes by April 2026, and Dokaben, a series about baseball, reached 205. Even so, Space Brothers really resonated with fans in Japan. People often mention how Koyama’s work was consistently inspiring and a powerful reminder to pursue even the most ambitious dreams.
