The popular manga series Space Brothers will end on June 11th after nearly two decades. Fans are sharing their cherished moments from the series online, celebrating Chuya Koyama’s acclaimed work. The final chapter will be published in Morning magazine, bringing a close to its 19-year run which began in December 2007. By November 2025, Space Brothers had sold over 34 million copies, achieving a similar level of success to other popular manga like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Urusei Yatsura, and One-Punch Man.
Space Brothers follows the inspiring journey of Mutta and Hibito Nanba, brothers who witness what they think is a UFO in 2006. This experience sparks a dream in Hibito to reach the moon, and in Mutta, to travel to Mars. Fast forward almost 20 years, and Hibito has become a fully trained astronaut, while Mutta hasn’t made much progress. When Hibito succeeds, Mutta receives an invitation to join astronaut training, giving him a second chance to pursue his own long-held ambition.
After 19 Years, Space Brothers’ Final Chapter Will Be Published on June 11, With the Final Manga Volume Set for Release on July 23
The popular manga series Space Brothers is coming to an end. Chapter 432 will be released on June 11th, and the final volume (issue 46) will be available on July 23rd. Fans in Japan are sharing heartfelt goodbyes online, expressing both happiness for the series’ run and sadness that it’s over, as Space Brothers has been a significant part of their lives for many years. One fan wrote, “It hit me that even the best stories have to end someday.” Readers are also expressing gratitude to the creator, Chuya Koyama, and reflecting on how quickly the 19-year run has passed. While not as well-known in Western countries, the manga is currently available to read digitally in English.
The manga series Space Brothers was a huge success, winning awards from both the Shogakukan and Kodansha Manga Awards in 2011. Its popularity led to a highly successful anime adaptation that ran for 99 episodes between April 2012 and March 2014. Interestingly, the anime featured a unique moment in history: astronaut Akihiko Hoshide recorded lines for Episode 31 while actually in space on the International Space Station. A live-action film followed in 2012, with Shun Oguri and Masaki Okada starring as the brothers, and even a cameo appearance by astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Fans are bracing for the end of several popular manga series in the near future. In addition to Space Brothers, which is set to finish in 2026, many expect Black Clover by Yuki Tabata to conclude around the May 1st issue of Jump Giga, though an official announcement hasn’t been made. There’s also speculation that the comedy-adventure series Sakamoto Days will wrap up sometime this year.

Forty-six volumes is a pretty good run for any manga, but it doesn’t quite compare to some of the really long-running series. For example, Golgo 13 had an incredible 220 volumes by April 2026, and Dokaben, a series about baseball, reached 205. Even so, Space Brothers really resonated with fans in Japan. People often mention how Koyama’s work was consistently inspiring and a powerful reminder to pursue even the most ambitious dreams.
