The Games That Introduced Mega Evolution
The launch of Pokémon X and Y was a huge event for the series. These games were the first core titles to feature 3D graphics, and they also introduced Mega Evolution, a captivating new gameplay element that quickly became a fan favorite. X and Y included a host of new Pokémon from Generation Six, as well as eighteen different Mega Evolutions, such as Mega Mewtwo, Mega Gengar, Mega Scizor, Mega Blaziken, and Mega Gardevoir, among others.

The Hoenn Remakes Put A Bigger Emphasis On Mega Evolution
More than a year after the release of X and Y, Pokémon fans finally got the remakes of Generation Three games they’d been hoping for over ten years: Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. These new versions featured fully 3D graphics and several improvements to make gameplay smoother, and they also introduced the exciting new Mega Evolution feature that debuted in the previous games.
The games Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire introduced eighteen new Mega Evolutions, focusing on Pokémon originally from the Hoenn region, such as Mega Camerupt, Mega Sharpedo, and Mega Sceptile. This also completed the Starter Trio’s Mega Evolutions, adding Mega Swampert to join Mega Blaziken from the previous games. Notably, Mega Rayquaza debuted as an incredibly powerful Pokémon. To make battles even more exciting, many important trainers – including the Elite Four and the Champion – used Mega Evolution during their first encounters, adding a new layer of challenge and enjoyment to the game.
Pokemon Sun And Moon/Ultra Sun And Ultra Moon
Mega Evolution Took A Backseat In Generation Seven
With Pokémon Sun and Moon, the seventh generation of Pokémon began, and a new battle feature called Z-Moves was introduced to build on the previous generation’s Mega Evolution. Interestingly, Mega Evolution wasn’t removed – both features were available in battles, allowing players to use either one or combine them strategically.
Honestly, one of the biggest disappointments with Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was the lack of new Mega Evolutions. It was a mechanic I really loved, but it felt totally sidelined during the main game – you only got to see them way after you beat the story. And it gets even stranger: the Pokedex entries for existing Mega Evolutions actually said that Mega Evolving hurt the Pokémon and messed with their personalities! It was a really weird choice, especially since we weren’t getting anything new to begin with.
Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu And Let’s Go Eevee
Mega Evolution’s Final Appearance Was Quite Underwhelming
In 2018, Game Freak and The Pokémon Company released Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, reimagined versions of the original Generation One games. These new versions featured the simpler catching system from Pokémon Go, attracting both newcomers and veteran players with a 3D world based on the Kanto region. To offer a fresh experience beyond previous remakes of Generation One, several changes were made, including the addition of Mega Evolution.
Despite adding Mega Evolutions, Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee had a limitation: the games only included Pokémon from the first generation. This meant only Mega Evolutions that originally appeared in that generation were available, and no new ones were added. While Mega Evolutions did make the games a little more enjoyable and difficult, it’s important to note that these titles left out key features like Pokémon abilities and held items, which lessened their impact on gameplay compared to other games in the series.

Mega Evolution Is Finally Back After Seven Long Years
The announcement that Pokemon: Legends: Z-A, the newest game in the Legends series, would bring back Mega Evolution thrilled fans, as this feature hadn’t been seen in main Pokemon games for more than seven years. Thankfully, the game lived up to the hype, offering not only new Mega Evolved Pokemon but also a fresh take on the entire concept.
Mega Evolution is central to Pokemon Legends: Z-A, not just a feature – the entire game is built around it. Players will battle powerful and exciting Rogue Mega Evolved Pokemon throughout the main story, and almost every competitor in the Z-A Royale uses one as their strongest Pokemon. The base game added many new Mega Evolutions for Pokemon from across all generations – including favorites like Meganium, Feraligatr, Emboar, and Dragonite – but the “Mega Dimension” expansion took it even further. It introduced even more surprising Mega Evolutions, such as Mega Baxcalibur, Mega Scovillain, and Mega Crabominable, along with the unique Z-Megas.
Needless to say, Pokemon Legends: Z-A is the perfect game for any die-hard fan of Mega Evolution.
Pokemon Champions
Mega Evolutions, Z-Moves, And Terastallization Will Finally Meet In One Game
Following the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Pokemon Champions reintroduced a popular battle feature to the main series games and its competitive scene. While fans are excited about the potential for Mega Evolution to battle alongside other powerful moves like Z-Moves and Terastallization, currently, only Mega Evolution is available in the first season of this free-to-play online game.
The reappearance of Mega Evolution in Pokemon Champions is particularly interesting because it’s been absent for nearly ten years. During that time, many Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving have been rebalanced with changes to their stats and abilities. Some, like Mega Charizard Y and Mega Blastoise, have remained powerful despite these changes and are now top contenders in competitive battles. Players can also use Mega Evolutions that first appeared in Legends: Z-A, and these have quickly become dominant forces, with Mega Froslass and Mega Eternal Floette being prime examples.
