Windrose has lots of resources to find. When you first arrive, you’ll need to collect basic things like clay, copper, fiber, and wood. As you play further into the game, you’ll start needing rarer materials.
Once you beat your first boss, you’ll realize you need iron to keep progressing. It’s like copper, but you’ll use it for a lot more things – building, improving your gear, and making new items.
Okay, so iron is seriously hard to come by in Windrose, and I’ve been running around trying to find it myself. Let me share what I’ve figured out about the best places to actually get some iron in this game.
Where to Find Iron Ore

To make iron, you first need to find iron ore. A clue to where to look is in the name of the iron ingot itself: it’s called “Foothills Iron Ingot,” so you’ll only find the ore in foothills areas.
As you advance through the game’s story, you’ll eventually be guided to an area with a foothills landscape on the map. However, the game won’t always clearly mark the exact location for you.
Foothills are raised land areas featuring rocky cliffs and noticeable hills. They become easily visible as you approach, standing out from the flatter, forested coastal areas.
You’ll typically find foothills areas on the western and southern parts of the map. Be warned – the enemies in these regions are significantly stronger and include types you haven’t seen before.
Finding iron is like searching for copper – you’ll need to locate ore deposits. But instead of caves, you’ll be looking for places like chasms where iron ore naturally forms.
Iron ore is easy to spot thanks to its reddish-brown, rusty color. You’ll need at least a copper pickaxe to mine it, so make sure you have one before you start looking!
How to Craft Iron Ingots
Once you’ve gathered iron ore, you can make Foothills Iron Ingots. The process is similar to making copper ingots – you’ll need both iron ore and charcoal.
Charcoal is made by heating wood in a kiln. To create a Foothills Iron Ingot, combine three iron ore and one piece of charcoal in a smelting furnace.

Smelting takes a while, so please be patient. Don’t forget to collect the ashes from the kiln – you’ll need them to make gunpowder later!
What Are Iron Ingots Used For?
Now that you have Foothills Iron Ingots, you can craft new structures and items that weren’t previously available. Here’s what you can build with them:
- Jewelry Table
- Nails
- Iron Bullets
- Iron Axe
- Iron Pickaxe
- Ironware
- Anvil
You’ll also need iron ore to improve your weapons and armor. To upgrade most weapons past level five, iron ore is essential. Plus, you’ll need a building station that’s been upgraded to level two.
