Ravi Cabot-Conyers on Joining the Star Wars Galaxy
How does belonging to the Star Wars universe feel to you on a personal level, considering your youth?
The idea of children spearheading a Star Wars series is incredibly intriguing as it represents a fresh, unexplored direction. Kids tend to bring an unbridled curiosity and unique outlook to the Star Wars universe, making it even more captivating. I’m thrilled about continuing this legacy as it still feels surreal, like a dream that only became real when I first stepped onto the set. The entire team is amazing, and collaborating with them on this project, to uphold the Star Wars heritage, and pay homage to the 80s-inspired films, has been an enjoyable experience.
Q: What can you tell us about where Skeleton Crew fits in the overall Star Wars timeline?
The setting for Skeleton Crew is roughly contemporary with The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, but it offers a unique atmosphere that deviates from the typical Star Wars settings. This time, we’re exploring suburban landscapes, which is quite unusual for the Star Wars universe. It’s an exciting change! I was thrilled when we had the opportunity to develop this distinct environment within Star Wars for the first time. However, I can’t help but imagine how fantastic it would be if characters like Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, or Grogu made an appearance in Skeleton Crew!
Q: Are there any cameos from any other Star Wars characters in Skeleton Crew?
As a die-hard Star Wars fan myself, I can’t reveal much, but trust me when I say you’re in for a treat! Whether you’re a hardcore devotee or just casually interested, there’s something here that’ll leave you grinning from ear to ear. That’s the magic of Star Wars – it brings joy to every gamer out there.
Could you share some insights on the character Wim, highlighting his key personality attributes and providing a brief description of him as an individual?
From the moment I received the material, Wim struck me as someone authentic. He’s a dreamer, always gazing off into the distance, yearning for a more thrilling existence. Unfortunately, his dreams often clash with reality, as he finds himself trapped in the suburbs, and his father isn’t supportive of his imaginative pursuits. As a result, Wim spends most of his time on his own.
I deeply appreciate the qualities he possesses, many of which I also embody, and it brings me great joy. His courage and optimism are truly inspiring, as he manages to find a silver lining in most circumstances. This is incredibly commendable. He genuinely values his friends and family. He yearns for everyone’s happiness wholeheartedly. He seems to desire something greater, to break free from the norm.
It appears to me that we have similar daring characteristics, but I wouldn’t go as far as claiming I’m as fearless as Wim. Wim is quite the daredevil, isn’t he? However, I do cherish my loved ones just as much as Wim does, and our shared affection is truly special. Participating in those experiences was a joy. I had the opportunity to try out new things, including some daring feats, which I found thrilling. Can you believe it, I even got to perform stunts for Star Wars! They are such a blast, and I discovered quite quickly that I enjoy them immensely.
At the conclusion of the performance, did you feel content with the development of his character? Did you find the final outcome satisfying when compared to its initial state?
Actor Interpretation: Playing around with the character arcs was delightful since it seemed like they unfolded over several months, despite the show being set within just a week. We managed to explore so much in such a short span, yet I still feel my character evolved alongside mine. The storylines involving me and my father, as well as me and another character Fern, were particularly engaging. Watching it is enjoyable, and many aspects resonate with the audience.
Working With Jude Law on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
A: How did it feel collaborating with Jude Law on a Star Wars production? Did he share any acting tips or suggestions with you during that time?
In a different words: This person is not just charming and exceptional, but also an extraordinary actor. He’s humble, selfless, and incredibly generous towards his co-stars. Unlike any other actor I’ve met or collaborated with, he truly embodies the emotions of his characters, making their struggles feel authentic.
I appreciate his unwavering dedication to his performances on set, which never ceases to amaze me. He collaborates seamlessly with others, making him an ideal scene partner, and he’s always thoughtful towards directors as well. With years of experience under his belt, he’s truly mastered the craft. Our conversations often revolve around Shakespeare, dreaming about potential collaborations in the future. We find ourselves having a lot in common.
A: Could I express how his presence affected my work performance and the way I handled my responsibilities? Or, perhaps, I could explain how he impacted my job performance and my methodology in carrying out my duties?
Cabot-Conyers: He always managed to keep me grounded. I believe he was incredibly beneficial for everyone, ensuring we all stayed focused and prepared for whatever lay ahead in the next scene. Spending time with him daily was an enjoyable experience because each day brought something unexpected. He consistently set new challenges for us, raising the bar higher and higher.
Over the course of those seven months, I’ve honed numerous talents as an actor – it wasn’t just about staying in character all that time, but also the privilege of working alongside Jude Law every day. His talent is simply remarkable, and sharing the stage with him daily was truly inspiring. It was a fantastic experience!
Ravi Cabot-Conyers’ Biggest Lessons Learned From Skeleton Crew
Q: What would you say is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from being part of this production?
Cabot-Conyers: Collaboration was key in this project due to its large scale and complexity. It wasn’t just about my role; it was about working seamlessly with my fellow actors and various departments like camera, sound, and more. I found myself learning from them as we all contributed to the overall success of the production. For instance, I observed how they operated the camera, and even had the opportunity to assist in focusing for another scene. Additionally, I marked positions and visited the sound team, ensuring that everyone played their part effectively.
I was also granted access to the editing room, where I witnessed directors and editors at work. It was thrilling observing them collaborate and understand the process behind the final product. Compared to the polished version I’ve recently viewed, the effort put in is astounding. Truly amazing! Despite the intense labor involved, there was an undeniable fun element as well – we ensured to keep some playfulness in the mix.
Q: If you could choose one Star Wars movie, what’s your favorite, and why?
In my own words: The film I’m going to mention is “A New Hope,” as it was the initial one that I watched. I’ve rewatched it multiple times since, and also recently revisited it for “Skeleton Crew.” I did this to refresh my memory of it. This movie has a cozy, nostalgic feel for me due to its enduring charm. The character of Luke Skywalker is captivating; his portrayal drew me in, and I find myself identifying with him as a character.
Star Wars has been a huge part of my life for so long, and that’s why this was so exciting. I can’t wait to see what people think of it and watch the whole thing for myself too. It’s going to be awesome.
Q: What’s next for you? What future projects do you have lined up?
As a gamer speaking: I’m absolutely thrilled about this indie flick titled Grassland, directed by two young directors, just 12 years my senior. They’ve truly outdone themselves, and the whole experience feels incredibly personal. I’ve watched it three times now, and each time, it leaves a lasting impact on me. It’s a powerful narrative that everyone should experience.
Apart from these, I’ve got three upcoming animated productions in the works, and I can’t quite say when they will be released yet. However, there are more projects on the horizon. On top of that, I’m working on a personal short film as well. This project involves me wearing multiple hats – writing, directing, editing, and producing it. Jon Favreau motivated me to take on this challenge due to its complexity. If I manage to pull it off, I will feel an immense sense of accomplishment. I’m truly grateful he inspired me to embark on this journey.
