I’m a huge fan of Solo Leveling, and the recent second season of the anime has been incredible! Seeing the Jeju Island arc come to life was amazing, especially the introduction of the Ant King – or Beru, as we now know him! He’s easily the most powerful enemy we’ve seen so far, taking on Hunters from both Korea and Japan. But honestly, I always wondered why he held back against the Korean Hunters, while the Japanese ones didn’t fare so well. Well, Chugong, the brilliant creator of Solo Leveling, finally explained it all! He’s expanded on the lore to give us a clear understanding of why Beru acted the way he did, and it really adds another layer to the story.
Solo Leveling Author Adds New Crucial Details To The Ant King’s Characterization
The Jeju Island story arc from Solo Leveling was covered in three episodes of the anime, starting with episode 10 of season 2 and ending with episode 13. These episodes featured two key fights. First, the top-ranked Korean Hunters battled the Ant Queen, a difficult fight ultimately won by Cha Hae-In. But then, the real danger emerged with the arrival of the Ant King, who was much stronger than the Queen.
The Ant King defeated several top-level Japanese Hunters before turning his attention to the Korean Hunters. Surprisingly, he only killed one of them, which many fans found confusing. His slow pace allowed Jinwoo to arrive and engage him in battle. This led many to believe the Korean Hunters were being unfairly protected by the story’s plot. Here’s the author’s explanation for what happened.
Honestly, Beru’s cruelty is just… shocking. The author, Chugong, described his behavior as ‘tearing off dragonfly wings,’ and that really captures it. He wasn’t just going to kill those hunters who wronged him – he wanted to make them suffer first. It wasn’t about a quick death at all. If Sung Jinwoo hadn’t shown up, I truly believe Beru would have relentlessly tortured those Korean hunters and then moved on to wipe out the entire Korean population. And the thing about him eating Min Byung-Gyu’s head? It wasn’t about the healing or being annoyed – it was a calculated move. He wanted to communicate with the race that killed the Queen – us Koreans – to figure out how to completely destroy us. It’s terrifying to think about just how methodical and evil his plan was.

Looking back, and considering what the author explained, the Ant King’s behavior is much clearer. He didn’t immediately attack the Korean hunters because he was already dealing with the Japanese ones. He only noticed them after the Queen alerted him. Plus, he believed killing the Ant Queen was a terrible offense, so simply killing the Korean hunters wasn’t enough punishment. He wanted to make them suffer as much as possible, inflicting intense pain over a long period.
Chugong revealed that the Ant King was intelligent enough to target Byung-Gyu specifically, hoping to learn how to communicate with humans – proving his desire for revenge and to instill fear. However, the Ant King is now an ally to Jinwoo. After Jinwoo defeated him, he used his Arise skill to transform the Ant King into a shadow, now called Beru. Beru is one of Jinwoo’s most powerful shadows and will play a significant role in the upcoming Solo Leveling anime, helping Jinwoo in his battles and continuing to grow stronger.
There’s currently no official word from A-1 Pictures about what they’re planning for the future of Solo Leveling’s animation. Although many fans are hoping for Season 3, it doesn’t look like that’s in the works right now. Recent reports suggest they’re developing an animated movie intended for release in theaters.
Although there’s no official announcement, the release is currently estimated around 2027, according to leaks from a committee report and statements made by staff in the past.
