A recent update brings the in-game Marketplace to The Sims 4 on PlayStation and Xbox, letting console players buy custom-made items and content. While the Marketplace has received mixed reactions from PC players, those on consoles may feel differently about this new feature.
The Marketplace was introduced in early March as part of The Sims 4‘s Maker Program and became available in the game on March 17th. It’s a special in-game shop where players can purchase custom content using real money, and it allows creators to earn from their designs.
The Sims 4’s Controversial Marketplace Has Come to Consoles
You can now find and buy custom content for your game through Maker Packs and Maker Kits on both PlayStation and Xbox versions of The Sims 4. The Marketplace has expanded to these consoles, letting you browse, purchase, and immediately add content without needing to restart the game. To buy anything from the Maker Program, you’ll first need to exchange real money for a virtual currency called Moola within The Marketplace, which is then used to make your purchases.
The recent launch of The Marketplace in The Sims 4 on PC has been met with strong disapproval from players. Many in the game’s community are upset because it’s broken existing mods, limits the creative freedom of creators in the Maker Program, and adds more ways to spend money in a game that’s already free to play. The reaction has been so negative that some players are using a mod to completely remove The Marketplace, including the in-game currency and shop, from the game.
Console players might be more accepting of The Marketplace. Traditionally, console gamers have expanded their gameplay by purchasing official downloadable content. There hasn’t been a good way for them to access fan-made modifications or custom content like PC players can. While The Marketplace does require payment for content, it’s optional and simply provides another way to add clothing and furniture options. Plus, new content is added to The Marketplace weekly, giving players fresh choices regularly.

With the addition of The Marketplace to the console versions of The Sims 4, how players buy custom content is changing. Maker Kits, previously available on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store, are being removed from those stores because players can now access them directly through The Marketplace within the game. While players can still buy official expansion and game packs on those online stores, all content created by community members will now be purchased and accessed in-game through The Marketplace.
