Who Is Lani Minella? The Actor Who Broke Jennifer Hale’s 11-Year Guiness Record

As a longtime gamer, I was surprised to learn that Lani Minella recently became the Guinness World Record holder for most prolific female video game voice actor! I always knew Jennifer Hale was amazing – she is Commander Shepard, after all – but Lani’s work is everywhere. You’ve definitely heard her, even if you don’t know her name. She’s the voice of Rouge the Bat in Sonic the Hedgehog, but honestly, I think she’s best known for playing Nancy Drew in those mystery games. She’s been acting and directing for years, and her time as Nancy Drew alone could be a whole article – there are so many games in that series!

Lani Minella is a remarkably versatile voice actress, often compared to the legendary Mel Blanc. While she’s best known for her work in games from the late 90s and early 2000s, she’s still actively creating audio through her company, AudioGodz. You’ve likely heard her – perhaps as a character in Sonic or even as a terrifying clicker in The Last of Us. Her impressive range makes her a familiar voice to many gamers.

How Lani Minella Started Her Voice Acting Legacy

Minella, known for her work on the Nancy Drew games, has been performing since childhood. She often entertained others by imitating her teachers and quickly developed a knack for doing different voices. During college, she honed this skill by doing celebrity impressions for a local radio station. Her radio work caught the attention of a company who hired her to provide voices for a LaserDisc sales presentation and later, for their children’s video games.

Following her initial experience with game work, Minella found it difficult to secure further opportunities in the industry. To address this, both for herself and fellow voice actors, she established AudioGodz in 1992. Minella describes AudioGodz as a complete sound production service, offering not only voice acting but also direction, casting, translation and ADR, sound design, editing, foley work, music composition, and a range of other audio services.

I began attending industry trade shows and realized it was hard for voice actors to find work. That led me to create audiogodz.com, a central resource for talent, sound design, editing, and everything else needed for projects. Through this, I’ve now worked on around 500 titles, which has been a really rewarding experience.

A Resume Anyone Would Be Jealous Of

Voice actress Lani Minella has an impressive vocal range of four octaves, which likely explains her extensive list of credits. This wide range allows her to easily take on diverse roles. For example, she voiced the notoriously irritating Bubsy the Bobcat in the PlayStation game Bubsy 3D and the sophisticated Emmy Altava in Professor Layton, and while her unique vocal style is still recognizable, she convincingly portrays both very different characters – or, in Bubsy’s case, does the best anyone could with such a purposefully grating character.

Lani Minella has an extensive resume – 14 pages long – largely focused on voice work in video games. While she’s famous for originally voicing Rouge the Bat in Sonic Adventure 2, much of her career has been with Activision Blizzard titles like Starcraft, Rift, and World of Warcraft. She’s proven incredibly versatile, transitioning from the voice of a charming character like Rouge to truly terrifying creatures. Notably, she voiced the repulsive Slivan in Starcraft 2 and the deeply unsettling Herald Velazj in World of Warcraft. She continues to excel at monster voices, recently lending her talents to The Last of Us as the Infected, Bloater, and Clicker, and to Subnautica as the Sea Emperor.

The Nancy Drew Drama

Lani Minella is best known for voicing Nancy Drew in the popular point-and-click video game series. She played the character from 1998 to 2015, with new games released twice a year for almost 20 years. This means Minella has extensive experience as the girl detective, comparable to Charles Martinet’s long run as Mario. So, when HeR Interactive announced they were recasting the role for Nancy Drew: Midnight in Salem, many fans were upset.

After Minella left her role, fans created petitions asking for her to be brought back. However, Brittany Cox, who also voices Fischl in Genshin Impact, was ultimately chosen to play Nancy in future games. Kotaku reported that HeR Interactive decided to go in a different direction because they wanted an actress who sounded younger and was located in Seattle. Minella was 65 years old when the latest game, Sea of Darkness, was released, and she had originally started voicing the 18-year-old Nancy when she was 48. She also didn’t live in Seattle. While this decision made financial sense for the company, HeR Interactive underestimated how upset fans would be with such a big change. By 2015, the Nancy Drew games had a dedicated, but small, fanbase, and changing the voice of the main character risked losing those loyal players, even if it attracted new ones.

The change in actors didn’t seem to improve the series’ success. Since 2015, only two new Nancy Drew games have been released: Midnight in Salem in 2019 and Mystery of the Seven Keys in 2024. Looking into the history of HeR Interactive shows that the lead actress leaving wasn’t the only problem; the development of these last two games was quite difficult.

Lani Minella’s Latest Work

Since her time playing Nancy Drew, Lani Minella has continued to have a very successful career. She’s been a regular voice actor in The Lord of the Rings Online, most recently appearing as Galadriel in the 2017 Mordor expansion and again in the 2022 Before the Shadow expansion. She also contributed additional voices to The Last of Us 2. At 74 years old, her work on Star Wars Outlaws, released August 30, 2024, brought her total video game roles to 354, officially earning her a Guinness World Record as the most prolific female video game voice actor.

In 2025, she took on a unique role outside of gaming, voicing the character of Kimi’s grandmother in the English dub of the anime film The Colors Within. It’s always fun to hear a voice you recognize, and it’s especially surprising when an actor known for games, like Minella, takes on a different kind of project.

It’s surprising Lani Minella isn’t mentioned more often in discussions about voice acting, especially considering she’s still actively working. While she frequently lends her voice to supporting characters or villains, rather than lead roles, her performances and directing are just as valuable as anyone else’s on a project. Unfortunately, people tend to remember the voice of the main character most. However, with her recent world record, Lani Minella is finally getting the recognition she deserves.
