Demon Slayer: 7 Strongest Sun Breathing Techniques

This article contains spoilers for the Demon Slayer manga and anime.

Demons are universally frightening, whether we’re talking about stories or something we might imagine in real life. They’re often depicted with sharp teeth, hiding in the darkness, and even preying on people. In Demon Slayer, the demons are a bit different because they’re led by a villain who, strangely enough, looks a lot like Michael Jackson. But beyond his appearance, Muzan is genuinely terrifying. He’s been causing chaos for centuries, and many powerful members of the Demon Slayer Corps have tried – and failed – to defeat him.

Even though the demons in Demon Slayer are incredibly strong, they can be defeated. The demon slayers have developed unique sword fighting techniques called Breathing Styles. The most powerful of these is Hinokami Kagura, also known as Sun Breathing, and it’s the original technique that all other Breathing Styles are based on.

Third Form: Raging Sun

The Third Form of Sun Breathing, called Raging Sun, involves two quick, horizontal sword slashes. This technique allows the user to both defend against attacks and strike back powerfully. Each slash is as effective as performing the First Form: Dance twice, making it useful for pushing back tough enemies, as seen when Tanjiro fought Daki. During the battle with Daki in the Entertainment District, Tanjiro used Raging Sun to cut through both Daki herself and her obi (sash).

Second Form: Clear Blue Sky

The Second Form, Clear Blue Sky, is a powerful attack where Tanjiro spins and slashes with his blade in a full circle. The cut creates a bright, sun-like trail. He used this technique during the battle on the Mugen Train, demonstrating its incredible strength. Even against a heavily armored opponent – Lower Moon One, whose neck was protected by the train itself and a reinforced spine – Tanjiro was able to slice right through with this form.

Dancing Flash

Dancing Flash is a special breathing technique developed by Tanjiro, building upon his existing Dance-like movements. It’s similar to Thunder Breathing in that it involves taking deep breaths to increase blood flow and power his attacks, focusing that energy into his legs for swift strikes. However, while Thunder Breathing’s Flash is incredibly fast, Dancing Flash prioritizes strength. It’s powerful enough to sever the true form of a powerful enemy like Hantengu.

Sixth Form: Solar Heat Haze

This technique is a rare Sun Breathing Style move that uses deception. The Sixth Form: Solar Heat Haze is an aggressive attack where the swordsman dashes towards their opponent. The speed of the strike creates a visual distortion, like a heat haze, making it hard for the enemy to judge the sword’s reach and position. This misdirection allows the attack to slip past their defenses.

Seventh Form: Beneficent Radiance

Okay, so the Seventh Form, Beneficent Radiance, is seriously cool. Basically, you launch yourself upwards in a spin, and then deliver a sweeping slash. The whole point of the spiral is to hit your opponent completely, leaving them absolutely no opening to dodge or defend. It’s incredibly effective – even Muzan, in his transformed state, couldn’t escape it! Honestly, it’s such a powerful move, it takes a ton of skill and practice to get it right.

Ninth Form: Sun Halo Dragon Head Dance

One of Tanjiro’s most powerful moves is the Ninth Form of Sun Breathing, called Sun Halo Dragon Head Dance. This technique lets him slice through and decapitate multiple demons with a series of swift, continuous slashes. The movements flow together like a dragon, which inspired the form’s name. Tanjiro famously used this technique to defeat Upper Moon Four by cutting through all of his bodies.

The Unnamed Thirteenth Form

Though it doesn’t have a specific name, the Thirteenth Form is considered the most powerful technique within Sun Breathing. It isn’t a single attack, but rather a continuous series of the other twelve forms performed one after another. This technique was specifically developed to defeat Muzan, who has a unique biology with seven hearts and five brains.
