As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience in the financial sector, I must admit that the rapid growth and evolution of the cryptocurrency market has been nothing short of astounding. In my early days, I would have never imagined that US-based Bitcoin ETFs could surpass even the enigmatic figure of Satoshi Nakamoto as the top holders of the world’s largest cryptocurrency.
Based on information from Eric Balchunas, a prominent ETF analyst, U.S.-based Bitcoin spot ETFs are now the biggest owners of Bitcoin, surpassing Satoshi Nakamoto in terms of ownership.
Following the latest upgrade, the combined amount of these products is approximately 1.104 million Bitcoins. Notably, it’s believed that Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, owns around 1.1 million Bitcoins as well.
Blachunas called the milestone “staggering,” pointing out that these items had only been introduced onto the market less than a year prior.
BlackRock’s IBIT fund has now exceeded $50 billion in total assets, significantly outpacing other exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in performance.
According to U.Today’s report, Balchunas anticipates that IBIT might emerge as the largest owner of Bitcoins by 2025.
Among the leading Bitcoin owners, you’ll find Binance (a significant player in cryptocurrencies), MicroStrategy (a well-known data analytics company), as well as the United States government, holding substantial amounts of Bitcoin.
It’s worth mentioning that although Satoshi currently ranks second, determining exactly how much Bitcoin they possess can be challenging. The leading blockchain investigator, Chainalysis, suggests that Satoshi might control around 1.124 million Bitcoins spread across approximately 36,000 wallets. If this estimate is correct, Satoshi still holds a significant portion of the total Bitcoin (for now). However, it’s possible that there are other undiscovered wallets not accounted for in Chainalysis’ analysis.
It’s doubtful that Satoshi Nakamoto will access their Bitcoin wallets again, as suggested by Mike Novogratz, the CEO of Galaxy Digital who claims that the creator of Bitcoin has passed away.
