A Brush With Death: Witch Hat Atelier Episode 4 Review

With spring arriving and winter ending, the anime series Witch Hat Atelier is bringing a touch of magic to viewers everywhere. The show has gotten off to a great start, earning a score of 8.7 on MAL and receiving lots of praise online for its faithful adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s popular manga. Though several fantasy anime are debuting this spring, Witch Hat Atelier stands out as a fan favorite, with people eagerly anticipating it since its announcement in 2022. The wait proved worthwhile, and as Coco starts her journey as a witch, the series promises exciting twists, turns, and plenty of action.

Coco mistakenly performs a powerful spell, turning her house and mother to stone. She’s rescued by Qifrey, a skilled witch who takes her in as an apprentice. Coco joins other young girls, like the reserved Agott, and begins learning magic – specifically, how to cast spells by drawing symbols with enchanted ink. While she enjoys her new life, Coco discovers dangerous secrets are hidden within it, and a mysterious group of rogue witches called the Brimmed Caps are watching her.

The Brimmed Hats Make Contact, and Chaos (As Expected) Soon Follows

After successfully proving herself on the Dadah Range and becoming Qifrey’s apprentice, Coco is diving deeper into the world of magic. This week, her adventurous spirit led to a bit of a mess – she accidentally ruined Agott’s shoes, which surprisingly gave her the ability to fly! Despite their rocky relationship, Coco wants to fix what she broke, though she needs to improve her spellcasting skills. Qifrey points out that witches often have their preferred tools, and Coco might need her own instead of using borrowed ones. This leads to a trip to Kalhn, a town populated entirely by witches, which completely amazes Coco.

Predictably, Agott quickly excused herself, claiming she had more important things to do than show Coco around. But Coco wasn’t discouraged. She immediately met Mister Nolnoa, the owner of The Starry Sword, a magical stationery shop. A huge Silverwood Tree grew right inside the store, and Coco learned that its sap was used to make the ink that powered all magic. Excited to find the perfect wand, she began testing them, but her attention was quickly drawn to a mysterious figure outside. The masked witch reminded Coco of someone she’d met years ago, so she ran after her, with her fellow apprentices trying to stop her. Suddenly, the surroundings changed, and the group realized with shock that they were no longer in Kalhn. They had been teleported to a disturbing, all-white labyrinth without even knowing it.

The situation quickly escalates when a huge dragon appears, and a strange member of the Brimmed Caps introduces Coco to the dangerous side of magic. The girls are forced to flee, with Agott using a strong fire spell to try and hold the dragon off, but it’s not enough. Cornered, Coco accidentally disrupts Agott’s spell, leading to a harsh outburst where Agott blames Coco for everything and cruelly references her mother’s past. Shaken by the scolding, Coco struggles to react as Qifrey desperately searches for his apprentices, fearing the worst.

Even Our Worst Moments Can Lead to Something Positive if We Just Keep On Keeping On

Witch Hat Atelier offers a refreshing take on magic, suggesting anyone can achieve greatness with hard work. The story follows Coco as she enters a completely new world, filled with both excitement and the worry that she won’t succeed. It’s understandable she feels lost and overwhelmed surrounded by more experienced magic users, even before a harsh comment from Agott. While she’ll undoubtedly find the courage to continue, it’s a tough journey, especially without her mother. Luckily, Qifrey provides strong support as a father figure, and his power and kindness will likely be Coco’s constant source of guidance as she adjusts to this unfamiliar life.

When we’re going through really tough times, it’s easy to forget what it feels like to be happy. But the only way to move forward is to face those challenges, and the story of Witch Hat Atelier shows us that even terrible situations can lead to something beautiful. Fear can give way to wonder, terror can blossom into joy, and we can grow stronger from our mistakes. Coco’s greatest strength is her resilience – her ability to keep trying, even when life feels incredibly difficult and the future is unclear.

With that being said, I’d still avoid turning your mother to stone, if at all possible.

Witch Hat Atelier can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
