I’m a huge anime fan, and it’s always been fascinating to me how strength isn’t everything. Sure, the strongest characters usually win, but sometimes the author decides to shake things up and… well, eliminate a powerhouse! It always feels risky, but honestly, it often turns out to be the right move for the story. It’s wild to see a seemingly invincible character fall, but it usually serves a greater purpose.
Sometimes, a story could have been even better if certain characters had lived longer, allowing for more development or impact. Here’s a look at some of the most compelling characters whose deaths felt premature.
Neji Hyuuga
- Anime: Naruto
Neji was an incredibly talented member of the Hyuuga Clan, surpassing his peers at a young age. He was nearly perfect in using the Byakugan, a special ability that let him easily target and block an opponent’s chakra. Once he hit these chakra points, his opponents couldn’t use their ninja abilities, allowing Neji to defeat them at will.
Neji was raised to believe in fate – that his life was already decided. This made him feel like nothing mattered, but his battle with Naruto gave him a new sense of hope and the possibility of changing his destiny. He remained a key figure until the Fourth Great Ninja War, where he bravely sacrificed himself to protect Naruto. Sadly, his death was ultimately in vain, and he could have had a much brighter future. Had he survived, he had the potential to become the leader of the Hyuuga Clan and finally break the cycle of predetermined fate that had haunted his family.
Portgas D. Ace
- Anime: One Piece
Portgas D. Ace was a powerful commander in the Whitebeard Pirates, leading the Second Division. He ate the Mera Mera no Mi, a Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to control and create fire. His attacks were incredibly strong, capable of leveling whole cities.
Ace’s death at Marineford, at the hands of Akainu, was a shocking moment in the story. While it pushed Luffy to grow as a person, some fans feel the author, Oda, could have approached it differently. Many believe it would have been better to keep Ace alive and instead have Whitebeard die, allowing Ace to continue Whitebeard’s will and carry on his legacy.
Caesar Zeppeli
- Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
Caesar Zeppeli played a key supporting role in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency. He was a student of Lisa Lisa and became highly skilled in Hamon, a technique essential for defeating the powerful Pillar Men.

Caesar Zeppeli lost his life battling Wamuu, considered the most noble of the Pillar Men. He fought both to prevent the Pillar Men from causing destruction and to locate a cure for Joseph. While his death was deeply upsetting, it’s difficult to say it ultimately served a vital purpose.
Rengoku
- Anime: Demon Slayer
Rengoku Kyojiro, known as the Flame Hashira, was a hugely popular character in the series. He was a master of Flame Breathing, a fighting style he largely developed himself. Over time, Rengoku defeated countless demons, and those that remained began to fear his power.
Rengoku tragically died battling Akaza, one of the strongest demons, during the events on the Mugen Train. Their fight was epic, but ultimately, Rengoku couldn’t defeat him. His death was a huge loss, and many fans wished he could have lived to help in the final battle against Muzan. Rengoku was a uniquely powerful and charismatic character, and he would have been a fantastic teacher for Tanjiro.
L Lawliet
- Anime: Death Note
L Lawliet is easily one of the most beloved anime characters ever created. He’s best known as the rival to Light Yagami, constantly staying one step ahead of him. Light actually had to use a clever trick involving a Shinigami’s feelings to finally eliminate L, suggesting that L would have otherwise solved the case and caught him.
Fans expected L’s death, understanding it was necessary for Light to keep using the Death Note. In fact, the story could have ended satisfyingly at that point. However, the anime continued, and unfortunately, the new characters introduced weren’t as compelling as L, making his loss feel even greater. Either L should have remained in the story, or the series should have concluded after his death.
Thors
- Anime: Vinland Saga
Thors was Thorfinn’s father and a remarkably powerful figure in Vinland Saga. Before settling down to raise a family, he was a highly skilled Viking leader, admired by some and envied by others. Eventually, Thors chose to disappear, pretending to be dead and beginning a new life in a different place.
Thors’ death significantly impacted the story, sending Thorfinn down a difficult and risky road. However, it felt premature, as Thors was a capable character who could have played a larger role before his death.
