Anime Characters Who Are Better Written Than Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy is one of the most recognizable anime characters, best known as the protagonist of One Piece. As captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, he’s on a quest to achieve the ultimate title: Pirate King.

People often underestimate Luffy, assuming he’s naive and lacks depth, but he’s actually a very thoughtful character. He strongly believes everyone deserves freedom and that people shouldn’t be limited by things like gender or race. While Luffy is one of the best-developed characters in anime, there are still other well-written characters out there.

Jotaro Kujo

  • Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders

I’ve watched Jotaro Kujo throughout the JoJo series, and while he’s best known as the lead in Stardust Crusaders, he pops up in other parts too. At first, in that third installment, he seemed a bit flat, but seeing him in later stories really fleshed him out and gave him more depth.

In Stone Ocean, Jotaro showed just how devoted a father he was, willing to risk everything – even the world’s future – to protect his daughter. He had the power to defeat Pucci, but couldn’t bear to face him knowing his daughter was also in danger. This was a significant development for Jotaro’s character, showcasing a depth we hadn’t seen before, and Hirohiko Araki deserves credit for crafting such a compelling and nuanced portrayal.

Naruto Uzumaki

  • Anime: Naruto

Naruto Uzumaki is the central character in Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto. While some criticize Naruto as a poorly developed character, this isn’t accurate. He had a very difficult childhood, but consistently chose not to harm others. Even after becoming incredibly powerful, he remained kind and never hurt the people in his village.

It’s important to remember that the villagers initially wanted to harm Naruto and were often cruel to him, yet he repeatedly risked his life to protect them. What makes Naruto special is his ability to achieve peace through understanding and dialogue, rather than just fighting. He’s mature enough to believe everyone deserves a chance at redemption, even those who have made mistakes. While some fans criticize his forgiveness of Obito, it’s consistent with his character – he’s always been a forgiving person.

Guts

  • Anime: Berserk

Guts is one of the most famous characters in anime. Even people who haven’t watched Berserk probably know him – the dark swordsman with the huge sword. While he’s often seen as a hopeless and sad character, that’s not entirely accurate.

Guts’s development as a character is truly remarkable, and he’s become a major influence on many other stories and characters in manga. You can even see his impact in popular “soulslike” video games, which often take inspiration from Berserk. Once a happy child, Guts was deeply scarred by betrayal and a horrific event called the Eclipse. Despite facing constant hardship, he never loses his will to fight, driven by his dedication to Casca and the memory of his friends. This unwavering spirit is what makes Guts such a compelling and beloved character.

Sakata Gintoki

  • Anime: Gintama

Gintoki isn’t your average anime hero. He’s older and more level-headed than many protagonists, but he’s still incredibly funny. What makes him great is his ability to switch between being a complete goofball and a surprisingly serious and thoughtful person – he can go from silly to sensible within a single episode.

Gintoki is known for always stepping in to help people in trouble, whether by fighting for them or offering wise guidance. Fans of Gintama agree that he’s a truly unique hero – there’s no one else quite like him who could do what he does.

Thorfinn

  • Anime: Vinland Saga

Many anime characters are driven by a desire for strength, constantly striving to become more powerful to overcome their opponents. However, Thorfinn from Vinland Saga is different. He began with a single-minded quest for revenge after his father was killed, but his purpose shifted dramatically when the person he hated died before his eyes.

Thorfinn had lost his will to live, but a friend helped him realize there was still purpose in life. This sparked a change in him, and he started to truly understand the meaning behind his father’s belief in not having enemies. Thorfinn’s transformation is incredibly well-done, and it’s rare to see such profound character development in anime.

Onizuka

  • Anime: Great Teacher Onizuka

I’m totally hooked on G.T.O.! It starts with Onizuka, who’s basically a lovable rebel just looking for a girlfriend. That’s what pushes him to become a teacher, but he’s not your typical educator. Forget textbooks – this guy really dives in to help his students with their lives and struggles. It’s awesome!

I just love how Onizuka is always sharing these really impactful life lessons with his students – it’s not just about helping them with schoolwork, but genuinely preparing them for life! And what really gets me is how much he challenges the traditional education system – he’s determined to shake things up and make it better, which is awesome.
