The popular game Dungeons & Dragons is launching an official live-play series called Dungeon Masters. The first campaign will feature actors you might recognize from Baldur’s Gate 3, Dispatch, and Critical Role. Though Wizards of the Coast has created similar series before, Dungeon Masters stands out with its official backing and high production quality.
Over the past ten years, watching other people play tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) – often called “actual play” series – has become hugely popular. This trend really took off with shows like Critical Role, which stars well-known voice actors including Matthew Mercer, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, and Liam O’Brien. When people were looking for entertainment during the COVID-19 pandemic, actual play series exploded in popularity, and that momentum has continued. Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) even had its own show, Dice, Camera, Action, but it ended in 2020 following a disagreement between two of the players.
Official D&D Dungeon Masters Actual Play Series Starts April 22
Dungeons & Dragons is launching a new actual play series called Dungeon Masters. The show will feature both existing and never-before-seen D&D content, along with custom game pieces and a high-quality cinematic experience. Renowned fantasy composer David Arkenstone, known for his work on nearly every World of Warcraft expansion including Midnight, has created an original score. To help players recreate the adventure, Dungeons & Dragons will release “Play-Along Packs” after each episode, offering materials for Dungeon Masters to run similar encounters in their own games.
The initial story arc for Dungeon Masters is titled “Ashes of the Black Rose.” It follows four adventurers who are stuck in Ravenloft, a terrifying realm governed by the Death Knight, Lord Soth, and focuses on their struggle to escape. The campaign will utilize content from the upcoming D&D book, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which releases on June 16th. Notably, many of the popular players from the first Dungeon Masters campaign will be using character classes featured in the new book.
- Neil Newbon: Crem the Reanimator Artificer
- Devora Wilde: Zora the Shadow Sorcery Sorcerer
- Christian Navarro: Eloin the Winter Walker Ranger
- Mayanna Berrin: Wesley the Grave Domain Cleric

Christian Navarro has appeared in several projects, including a guest role as F.R.I.D.A. on Critical Role, as Hector in Date Everything!, and as Tony in 13 Reasons Why. Mayanna Berrin is known for her role as Pom Pom in Dispatch, while Jasmine Bhullar is a veteran DM of actual play series like Dimension 20, DesiQuest, and Battle for Beyond. She also contributed to Critical Role as a writer and cultural advisor for the continent of Marquet.
