Shooter games are consistently popular, but the genre has evolved from classics like Halo and Medal of Honor. This is especially noticeable in competitive gaming, where newer games like ARC Raiders – which emphasize exploration, discovery, and stealth – are often more successful than traditional shooters such as Call of Duty. This shift is positive; even though I prefer classic shooters, having more variety and innovation in online shooting games creates a more engaging and vibrant gaming community for everyone.

It’s no longer enough to simply release a game with good features and content; developers need to constantly update and improve it to keep players engaged. We’ve seen this with games like ARC Raiders and Battlefield 6, which initially did very well but have lost players as people moved on to new experiences. One game gaining attention is Gray Zone Warfare. Even though it’s still in early development, it’s being compared positively to games like ARC Raiders, Battlefield 6, Marathon, and Escape from Tarkov, and it has the potential to become very popular.

Set on a war-torn island in Southeast Asia, Gray Zone Warfare offers more than just a typical military simulation. The game’s creators, MADFINGER Games, have openly stated its inspiration comes from the science fiction novel Roadside Picnic—the same source material that influenced games like Metro 2033 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. This connection adds a layer of intriguing mystery to the game’s world, suggesting a hidden and unsettling story beneath its realistic military setting.
As a huge fan of realistic military shooters, I was really impressed with Gray Zone Warfare. It really feels like a hardcore simulation, demanding you think through your tactics, plan ahead, and work as a team. The gunplay isn’t just about pointing and shooting; it’s complex and feels impactful. They’ve even gone the extra mile with details like realistic healing and lasting injuries – you can actually see the damage on characters. It reminds me a lot of Escape from Tarkov visually, but thankfully it seems to avoid a lot of the performance issues and bugs that plagued that game.
Gray Zone Warfare’s PvE Options
A common criticism of ARC Raiders is its focus on player-versus-player (PvP) combat and lack of cooperative player-versus-environment (PvE) modes. However, the developers at Embark Studios intentionally designed the game this way, aiming for a competitive experience where players clash against each other. While some players don’t enjoy the tension of PvP in a game where a single shot can undo a long session, the developers believe this competitive element is crucial to the game’s formula.

This PvE option, though simple, greatly enhances the overall experience, allowing players to enjoy the game as a cooperative shooter. It’s perfect for newcomers learning the game, and also for veteran PvP players who want a more relaxed pace. This fits well with the game’s story, which is inspired by Roadside Picnic. Importantly, you don’t need separate saves or characters to switch between these modes – you can freely move between PvP, PvE, and PvPvE without losing any progress.
Gray Zone Warfare’s 0.4 Update Makes It Even Better
Gray Zone Warfare has been gaining popularity since it launched in early access in 2024, but a recent update has significantly boosted player interest. Released on March 31st, Update 0.4 brings numerous improvements to Gray Zone, with key changes including:

- Over 25 new locations
- Improvements to lighting, visual effects, and UI
- More lore to discover
- Eight new weapons and over 150 new gear pieces
Since the game is still in development, it’s not without flaws. The enemy AI isn’t very smart, and some quests are better than others. However, most players agree that it’s surprisingly good, and many think it could replace popular games like ARC Raiders, Marathon, and Tarkov as a top extraction shooter or military simulator. Hopefully, the developers can maintain this positive progress when the full version is released.
