You can fish anywhere in the open ocean of Windrose, but you’ll first need a fishing rod. The easiest rod to craft early in the game is the Simple Fishing Rod, though it requires materials found in the Foothills, so it might take a little while to get started. Luckily, those materials are fairly easy to collect, and fishing is a straightforward activity.

How to Get a Fishing Rod in Windrose
You can craft a Simple Fishing Rod using a Workbench. To unlock the ability to make one, you first need to improve your Workbench in Windrose. Do this by building either a Sawhorse or a Toolbox near your Bonfire. Each of these constructions raises the level of all Workbenches in your base by one, and you’ll need at least a level 2 Workbench to create a Simple Fishing Rod.
The materials you need to craft a Simple Fishing Rod are:
- 5 Hardwood
- 3 Rope
- 2 Iron Ingot
You can find Iron and Hardwood on any island that has the Foothills area. A good way to locate one of these islands is to play through the main story until you defeat Thomas Richards, the first boss. After defeating him, you’ll receive a quest called “Needle in a Haystack” that will guide you to a Foothills island.
Okay, so I figured out how to get some essential stuff in Windrose! If you need Iron, just explore the caves – that’s where I found it. Hardwood is a bit easier, just look around for those Divi-Divi trees. And Rope? Thankfully, it’s pretty simple. All you need is to collect some Plant Fibers and then craft it at a Workbench. Easy peasy!
How to Catch Fish in Windrose
To fish, equip your Simple Fishing Rod and use your attack button (left mouse click on keyboard and mouse) to cast your line. Once a fish bites, press the attack button again to reel it in. Fishing in Windrose doesn’t involve any complex minigames – it’s simple! When your bobber dips, you’ll either successfully catch a fish or you won’t.
To make sure you catch a fish every time, pay close attention to the sounds you hear when your bobber moves. If you hear a sound like a bite or a chomp, it means you’ve hooked one! Immediately reel in your line, and a fish will be added to your inventory.
How to Get Fish Fillets in Windrose
Simply catching raw fish isn’t very useful. To make them usable for cooking, you need to turn them into Fish Fillets. Open your inventory and interact with the fish you’ve caught. Usually, you can do this by right-clicking on the fish in your inventory. Keep in mind that rarer types of fish will give you more fillets when processed.
In Windrose, you have plenty of options for fishing – you can cast a line from the beach close to your home base, or right from the deck of your ship.
