If you want to survive as a pirate, a gun isn’t enough. You’ll also need a solid weapon for close combat and some protective armor.
Windrose lets you customize your character with lots of armor and even more weapons, so you can build a play style that fits you perfectly.
Not all weapons and armor are the same – some are definitely more effective than others. If you want to improve your chances of survival in Windrose, which weapons and armor sets should you prioritize finding?
How to Find and Craft Weapons and Armor

Windrose doesn’t just hand you weapons and armor. You’ll have to find or create them yourself. As you explore the islands, you’ll find chests hidden in interesting locations.
Chests might contain weapons or armor, so be sure to open every one you find. You can also get weapons and armor by defeating enemies, including bosses.
To learn how to make an item, you simply need to possess it first. This is especially useful when playing with friends online – they can give you weapons or armor, allowing you to craft those items for yourself and then return the originals.
Okay, so if I want to make better weapons and armor, I need to build two things at my camp: a weapons workbench and an armor workbench. Once those are built, I can pull up the crafting menu and start making all sorts of new gear!
To improve your weapons and armor, you’ll also want to work with the different groups in the game, as they provide the materials you need for upgrades.
Best Melee Weapons
As a fan of weapon combat, I’ve noticed there are tons of different melee weapons out there, but they mostly fall into two big groups: one-handed and two-handed. If you’re using a one-handed weapon, you’ll see things like rapiers, cutlasses, and maces. But if you prefer a two-handed weapon, you’re looking at big stuff like greatswords and halberds!
As you get stronger, each weapon will also improve based on your skills and stats, so consider that as you level up. Here are some weapons we suggest looking out for.
| Weapon Name | Weapon Type | Ability | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dueling Greatsword | Greatsword | Perfect blocks increase your melee damage by 10%. Stacks three times. Taking damage removes the effect. | If you are good at blocking, you will get an amazing damage buff of up to 30% while using this weapon. This massive buff, combined with other weapon buffs from the talents menu, will absolutely destroy most enemies, and allow you to handle bosses more easily. Additionally, this weapon restores health by blocking when ascended. |
| Sturdy Rapier | Rapier | Increases the perfect block opportunity window. | Those who are struggling with parrying will love the Sturdy Rapier, as it increases the block window, allowing you to more easily parry oncoming attacks. This is a great weapon to help you practice, but it also has increased critical damage when ascended, making it far more lethal. |
| Executioner | Halberd | Killing enemies grants stacks of decimation. Each stack increases your critical hit chance by 10%. Stacks three times. | It isn’t very difficult to kill opponents in Windrose, and the Executioner takes advantage of that by giving you a 10% boost to critical hit chance for each enemy you kill. This can stack up to 30%, and when combined with talents and jewelry that increases critical hit chance, will make you deal massive damage. |
| Cutlass | Cutlass | Hits apply the take aim effect, increasing your ranged weapon damage by 10% per stack. Stacks up to nine times. | The basic cutlass has an amazing ability that works well with ranged weapons, so if you are a fan of using a sword and pistol, this is a great weapon to have. Hitting an enemy applies an effect that increases your firearm’s damage. This effect can stack up to a 90% damage increase, allowing you to devastate foes with a single shot from your firearm. |
| Rapier of a Thousand Cuts | Rapier | Dealing damage applies the bleed effect, stacking up to five times. | Bleed is a very powerful effect in Windrose, and the Rapier of a Thousand Cuts will allow you to bleed your enemies dry. Each hit from this weapon applies the bleeding effect, which deals 25 damage per second to an enemy. This stacks up to five times, dealing large ticks of 125 damage per second. Additionally, this weapon restores your temporal health using this bleed damage once ascended. |
| Bonebreaker | Mace | The more stamina you have, the more damage this weapon deals. | Bonebreaker is a well-rounded weapon that deals more damage the more stamina you have remaining. Since you can build up your stamina and make your attacks consume less of it, this weapon can maintain a strong damage buff. |
Best Ranged Weapons
Windrose features two kinds of ranged weapons: pistols and muskets. Muskets are powerful, but require two hands to use. Pistols are lighter and can be used with another one-handed weapon, giving players more options in combat.
| Weapon Name | Weapon Type | Ability | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drake’s Double-Barreled Pistol | Pistol | Can fire two shots in quick succession. | This is one of the fastest-firing pistols in the game, with it allowing you to fire two shots rapidly. Additionally, when ascended, this firearm applies the vulnerability effect to a target, increasing all the damage you deal to them by 15%. |
| Reliable Pistol | Pistol | Can fire three shots without reloading. | Reloading can be a hassle, especially in combat. This pistol is the only firearm that can fire three shots before reloading, giving you more ammunition. Additionally, when ascended, this weapon deals 15% bonus damage to pirates, outlaws, and cutthroats. |
| Buccaneer’s Friend | Musket | Weapon spread is eliminated when standing still. | The Buccaneer’s Friend is great for getting that first shot off. If you are standing still, the weapon spread is nearly eliminated, making it so you deal more damage with that shot. When ascended, this weapon deals more damage to animals, making hunting easier. |
| Infantry Musket | Musket | Allows you to perform a bayonet attack. Scales with agility. | This is the only musket that scales with the agility stat, making it great for those who want to focus on agility-based weapons. Also, you can use a bayonet attack with this musket, allowing you to attack enemies who get close while firing it. |
Best Armor Sets
Armor sets work a little differently than weapons. When you equip two pieces from a set, you get one bonus effect. Wearing four pieces unlocks a second, additional bonus.
| Armor Set | Set Bonus 1 | Set Bonus 2 | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pikeman’s Armor | Increases maximum health by 160. | Increases two-handed weapon damage by 15%. | We recommend wearing two pieces of the Pikeman’s armor set, unless you plan on using two-handed weapons. This armor can be paired with any other set and grants a solid 160 bonus health for wearing two pieces of the set. |
| Flibustier’s Armor | Attacks consume 20% less stamina. | Increases one-handed weapon damage by 15%. | This is another set that we recommend only using two pieces of, unless you want the extra one-handed weapon damage. Lowering your stamina consumption during fights is great, allowing you to get more hits in and move around more. |
| Conquistador’s Armor | Increases damage resistance by 15%. | The first few hits you take do not interrupt your actions. | Pairing the Conquistador’s Armor with the Pikeman’s Armor will make you very tanky, but using the full Conquistador’s Armor set will allow you to go into fights and not have to worry about attacks. While you will still take damage, you won’t be stunned by the first few hits. This is great if you are not amazing at parrying. |
Armor offers various benefits, so we suggest using both Pikeman’s Armor and Flibustier’s Armor. This combination boosts your health and slightly reduces your attack power. If you prefer greater defense, you can swap the Flibustier’s Armor for Conquistador’s Armor instead.
