Fragmentary Order Won’t be an Extraction Shooter, Says Escape From Tarkov Founder

Escape from Tarkov really launched the popularity of ‘extraction shooter‘ games – titles where you enter a dangerous area, collect loot, and try to escape – inspiring games like ARC Raiders and Marathon. Now, its creator, Nikita Buyanov, is aiming to push boundaries with his next project.

While Battlestate Games is still developing Escape from Tarkov, Buyanov is now working on a new science fiction first-person shooter called Fragmentary Order, created by the new studio, Rant Gaming Studios.

Tarkov Creator Says Fragmentary Order Could Be the Start of a New Genre

Fragmentary Order

We don’t yet know exactly how you’ll play Fragmentary Order, but we’ve learned a lot about the game’s story and setting.

The game FragOrder is set in 2251, following a near-extinction event for humanity. A corporation called Core, run by artificial intelligence, saved humankind from total destruction.

This company helped humanity make huge strides – ending hunger and war, uniting world governments, and even starting to explore our solar system. However, its power has recently diminished as new, ambitious groups have formed, leading to a period of instability and conflict known as the Fragmented Order.

Fans have affectionately started calling this new space shooter “Starkov,” but according to Buyanov, the game might surprise players. He described it as a “combat simulator” with extraction elements, but emphasized they’re aiming for something unique. The developers want to innovate the genre, potentially even creating a new one altogether.

FragOrder has been in development for about a year, using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, but there’s no confirmed release date yet.

According to Buyanov, while the core gameplay involves sneaking in and out of locations, there will be other ways to play. Ultimately, the goal is to improve your character’s life by making money within the game’s systems. He clarifies that simply extracting won’t be the primary focus; it’s just one element of a larger experience.

Players of Escape from Tarkov are curious if FragOrder will tie into the game’s story, but when asked about a connection, Buyanov remained tight-lipped, simply stating he wouldn’t comment on it.

Following the huge success of ARC Raiders, named the best multiplayer game of the year, and the strong performance of Marathon, extraction shooters are becoming increasingly popular. According to Buyanov, the most important element for success in this genre is creating a game with heart and personality.

It feels like game developers are stuck in a cycle. Many games, particularly in the extraction shooter genre, simply copy features from each other instead of trying anything new. They often miss the point that extraction shooters and games like Escape from Tarkov have a unique feel. Simply recreating the same mechanics isn’t enough – you need to create something with passion and build a game you genuinely enjoy playing.
