Final Fantasy 14 has announced its sixth major expansion, Evercold. Players will journey to the stunning world of the Fourth Reflection, which is facing a dangerous ice-related disaster. While details are still emerging, Final Fantasy 14 fans can expect Evercold to be released around early January 2027.
In the past, new expansions for Final Fantasy 14 usually arrived about every two years, but the time between releases has been getting longer. Both Endwalker and Dawntrail were released around two and a half years after the previous expansion, and the upcoming Evercold is expected to follow this pattern. While the wait can be tough, this extra time allows the developers to thoroughly prepare the new content. Patch 7.5 is already playing a key role in building the groundwork for the expansion.
FF14 Patch 7.5 – The Bridge Between Dawntrail and Evercold
Navigating the Narrative of Final Fantasy 14: Evercold’s Waiting Room
The first part of Final Fantasy 14’s Patch 7.5, called Trail to the Heavens, launched on April 28th. This patch is the beginning of a series of updates designed to connect the storylines of the current expansion, Dawntrail, with the next, Evercold. These updates will finish up several ongoing stories, including the Final Fantasy 11 crossover raid (Echoes of Vana’diel), more adventures with Hildibrand, the Occult Crescent storyline, and the main game’s story. The main story content in Patch 7.5 serves as both an ending to Dawntrail and a beginning for Evercold, and it’s being released in two parts: the first is available now, and the second will arrive on September 8th.
- Patch 7.5 (Live now): Main Scenario part 1, Echoes of Vana’diel conclusion
- Patch 7.51 (June 2): Auxesia Cosmic Exploration Star, Tiisol Ja Custom Deliveries, Dancing Mad (Ultimate)
- Patch 7.55 (July 28): Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures, Occult Crescent: North Horn
- Patch 7.56 (September 8): Main Scenario part 2, Beastmaster Limited Job
The new 8.0 update, called Evercold, marks the start of a major story arc in Final Fantasy 14 called The Godless Realms Saga. This ongoing narrative will delve into the world of Final Fantasy 14, looking at a version of it without the influence of the gods Zodiark and Hydaelyn, and focus on preventing a looming, icy disaster from destroying everything.
We still don’t know all the details about why and how the Warrior of Light will journey to the Fourth Reflection in Evercold. However, the first part of the main story questline released with Final Fantasy XIV Patch 7.5 on April 28th offers some intriguing hints. While players will have to wait until next January for the full story, upcoming Fan Festivals on July 25th and October 31st, along with the second part of the MSQ, should reveal more information to keep them engaged until then.
Adapting Gameplay Systems For a New Saga of Final Fantasy 14
Evolving Final Fantasy 14’s Jobs and Combat
In addition to the main story, Final Fantasy 14 is getting some gameplay tweaks in Patch 7.5 to get ready for the Evercold expansion. A key part of this preparation is adjusting how different character jobs play. Patch 7.5 included improvements to abilities for several jobs, like Warrior, Samurai, Reaper, Dancer, Summoner, and Sage. While these kinds of updates happen with most major releases, the bigger changes coming in Evercold make this update especially important.
With the 8.0 update, each job will offer two control schemes: Reborn and Evolved. Evolved features a streamlined design with fewer buttons and abilities that change based on your target and distance, making it easier to play while still offering strategic depth. Reborn will feel more familiar to longtime fans, retaining the classic combat styles. Balance adjustments made in patch 7.5 will directly impact how Reborn plays and will help bridge the gap between it and the major job changes coming in the Evercold expansion.
Getting More Final Fantasy 14 Players Playing Together
A major update in version 7.5 is the addition of the popular Shadowbringers expansion to the free trial of Final Fantasy 14. Now, new players can experience the complete stories of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers without paying anything. While playing the free trial, players can choose any job except Reaper, Sage, Viper, and Pictomancer, and play as any race except male Viera and female Hrothgar. This expanded free trial, including what many consider the best expansion and story in the entire Final Fantasy series, is expected to attract even more players to the popular online game before the release of Evercold.
Final Fantasy 14 is expanding to the Nintendo Switch 2 before the release of patch 8.0, and the Evercold expansion will be the first one available on the console. It’s planned for release in August 2026, with a short early access period beforehand, allowing players to experience the main story from patch 7.56 on the new system.
Finally, Final Fantasy 14 is introducing a new feature called Same-Region Player Matching. This allows players on different servers within the same geographic region to play together. It’s designed to shorten wait times for activities and remove the need to use the Data Center Travel system for things like raids or finding groups. Testing will begin in Japan with the 7.5x update, and the developers aim to expand it to North America, Europe, and China by the time Evercold releases.
The next major update to Final Fantasy 14, version 8.0, is expected to be massive. It’s so large that it will likely exceed the storage capacity of the PlayStation 4 by updates 8.2 or 8.3, meaning some players may need to upgrade to a PS5. Beyond just the file size, this update, titled Evercold, could be a pivotal moment for the game, much like the Endwalker expansion was. While players have to wait until later this year for the full 8.0 release, with ongoing updates, events, and the release of new platforms, the time will likely pass quickly.
