This article has spoilers for the Frieren manga.
Watching Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, it’s clear that magic is everything in this world. It connects people, gives them something to strive for, and often decides the outcome of conflicts. While anyone can learn magic, some, like Fern, dedicate themselves to mastering it and becoming truly powerful First-Class Mages. It’s fascinating to see how different people approach and utilize this power.
Even highly skilled First-Class Mages aren’t as powerful as Great Mages. Great Mages are rare and exceptionally talented individuals who have significantly advanced the field of magic. They possess immense power and knowledge, making them some of the strongest characters in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. Let’s examine each of these Great Mages and compare their abilities.
4. Minus
Minus is an elf mage mentioned in chapter 133 of the Frieren manga. The Shadow Warriors say she was a powerful mage responsible for several wars in the Southern Lands, which was considered high treason. She was eventually defeated by a warrior believed to be Lowe. While not much is known about her, the scale of the wars she instigated suggests she was incredibly strong. As an elf, she might have been as powerful as, or even more powerful than, Frieren, but without more information, it’s reasonable to consider her less prominent.
3. Flamme
Flamme, a famous mage, played a huge role in helping people learn and use magic. Serie says she believed everyone should have access to it. At a time when magic was feared and linked to demons, Flamme convinced the emperor to allow its study and practice. She also trained the first Imperial Mages, who are now a powerful magical group. Thanks to Flamme’s work, humans were able to embrace magic and ultimately defend themselves against the Demon Lord’s army.
Flamme was a remarkably talented mage, a student of Serie, and is considered the most influential human mage ever. Even thousands of years after she lived, the magical barriers she created still hold strong. She also trained Frieren, teaching her a crucial skill: how to conceal her magical power. By hiding their mana, mages could mislead demons into thinking they were weaker, gaining a valuable edge in battle.

2. Frieren
Frieren is a powerful elf mage famous for traveling with the Hero Party and playing a key role in defeating the Demon Lord. With thousands of years of experience, she’s known as “Frieren the Slayer” because she’s destroyed more demons than anyone else. She learned her skills from the great human mage Flamme, who taught her how to hide her magical power – a technique she used to overcome powerful enemies like Aura the Guillotine.
Frieren is a remarkably talented mage, but Serie believes she hasn’t even begun to reach her full power. She enjoys collecting spells, giving her a vast and diverse repertoire. While many of these spells aren’t practical for battles, she does possess some incredibly strong ones. During her fight with a clone of herself, Frieren demonstrated spells of immense power. The clone also cast a spell so overwhelmingly powerful that Fern couldn’t even recognize it as an attack, yet it badly injured her and shattered her staff. Fern referred to this spell as “The Height of Magic”.
Frieren’s deep understanding of magic wasn’t just for casting spells; she could also break down and improve existing ones, helping to advance magic for everyone. A prime example is Zoltraak, a once-feared spell she simplified into a common attack used by many modern mages. Even though she seems relaxed, Frieren possesses magical power, mana reserves, and skills that far exceed those of most people.
1. Serie
Serie, often called the Living Grimoire, is renowned for her seemingly limitless knowledge of spells – potentially every one ever created. She can not only recall an incredible number of spells, but also teach them to others. Like Frieren, Serie is an elf who has lived for over a millennium and has guided powerful mages like Flamme and Lernen.
She’s an exceptionally skilled magic user with incredible instincts. During a challenging part of the First-Class Mage exam, she conjured a barrier considered impossible to break – it took Frieren an entire day to find a way through it. She also immediately recognized all of Land’s hidden clones, something no one else had been able to do. Even Frieren, a powerful mage herself, admires her instincts, saying they’re consistently accurate.
Serie hides her magical power so well that Lernen, who could sense fluctuations in Frieren’s magic, couldn’t detect it. Only Fern, a human, was able to see Serie’s magic. Interestingly, even when Serie suppresses her power, it’s as strong as Frieren’s magic when she isn’t suppressing hers, proving that Serie is likely the most powerful mage in the world.
There are still many mysteries and stories yet to be revealed in the world of Frieren. The series beautifully connects the past with the present, introducing us to new characters and deepening our understanding of those we already know. As the story continues, we’ll get a better sense of how powerful Frieren and Serie truly are. Do you think Serie is currently the most powerful mage we’ve seen?
