For years, the way new Pokemon games are made has followed a familiar pattern. But the upcoming release of Pokemon Winds and Waves is set to change that. The game is so different that, depending on how players react, it’s unlikely Game Freak will be able to revert to the old way of doing things.
I remember when the first Pokemon games came out – it was kinda crazy behind the scenes, at least that’s how it felt. It was a totally new idea, and nobody knew it would blow up like it did! But around Generation 5, Game Freak really found a rhythm. They started releasing a new game every three years, which some people think held them back creatively. But honestly, for a lot of us fans, it just meant Pokemon was always reliably coming back into our lives – it became a constant we could count on.

The Pokémon games Black and White came out in 2010, three years after Diamond and Pearl. Pokémon releases followed this roughly three-year pattern for several generations – X and Y were released three years after Black and White, Sun and Moon three years after X and Y, and so on. However, the expected release of Pokémon Winds and Waves in late 2027 breaks this pattern. This will mark the first time there’s been a five-year gap between main Pokémon game releases.

Over time, Pokémon releases had fallen into a pretty clear pattern. Fans could usually guess when a new generation of games was coming, as well as when remakes or spin-off titles would be announced. The biggest surprises recently have been the release of the new Pokémon Legends games, and the fact that we still haven’t seen remakes of Pokémon Black and White.
It’s important to remember that the three-year gap between game releases doesn’t mean each game takes three years to make. Development happens in phases, with different games at different stages – currently, reports indicate Pokemon Legends 3 is in full production while Pokemon Gen 11 is in the early planning stages. Nevertheless, fans have come to see this three-year timeframe as a significant milestone.

Fans are hoping that longer development times will lead to higher-quality Pokémon games, especially after criticisms of recent releases. Games like Sword and Shield were criticized for not fully utilizing the Switch console and for removing Pokémon, while Scarlet and Violet received backlash for their graphics. Even Pokemon Legends: Z-A disappointed some due to its limited budget and resulting visuals. However, despite these issues, each game still delivered new Pokémon and entertained a large audience. If the gap between game releases extends to five years, we might only see four new generations of Pokémon over the next two decades, compared to the roughly seven we’ve had previously. It remains to be seen if this will actually improve the games, but the era of new releases every three years is over.
