Xbox 360 Co-Op Games that Reward Exploration

The Xbox 360 offered a huge variety of games you could play with friends, from fun party games like Fuzion Frenzy 2 to exciting adventures like Castle Crashers. The Kinect also added a new way to play together with motion-based games.

Some co-op games were simple and meant for short, repeated play sessions. However, many others provided larger, more open worlds where players could explore freely and discover hidden content.

Here are eight great Xbox 360 games you can still play with a friend that really encourage you to discover everything the game has to offer.

8. Left 4 Dead 2

Scrounging for Supplies

While many Valve games focus on tight, expertly designed levels – like those in Team Fortress 2 – Left 4 Dead 2 stands out by making exploration a core part of the gameplay experience.

As a huge fan, I always think of Left 4 Dead 2 as the zombie co-op game to play. You get to pick one of four survivors – Coach, Ellis, Nick, or Rochelle – and work together to battle endless waves of zombies and those really creepy special infected. The whole game takes place in the American South, and you’re constantly trying to reach safe houses and hopefully, eventually, a way to escape!

Exploring in L4D2 is key because the best weapons and essential supplies – like medkits, defibrillators, and pipe bombs – are usually hidden off the main path. Finding these items can be crucial for surviving difficult waves of zombies and keeping your whole team alive.

7. Aliens: Colonial Marines

Iconic Film Weapons and Lore

While not the most critically acclaimed Alien game or Gearbox Software’s best first-person shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines offers a rewarding experience for fans of the Alien universe. Exploring iconic locations like Hadley’s Hope and the USS Sulaco is particularly enjoyable, whether playing alone or with up to three friends in co-op.

I love how the game really fleshes out the story! Each level has these cool dog tags and audio logs you can find. They don’t just tell you what happened in the first Aliens movie, but also what led up to the game itself. I even found recordings of Newt’s mom trying to escape after her dad got… well, you know, and a bunch detailing what happened after the crew explored that creepy Derelict ship from the movie. It’s awesome backstory!

In addition to audio logs and dog tags, players can discover powerful, unique weapon versions – like a special version of Vasquez’s Smart Gun – and amusing hidden surprises. These Easter eggs add to the fun, including Xenomorph eggs decorated for Easter, a huge rolling donut, and a reference to the movie Spaceballs.

6. LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Secrets Around Every Corner

TT Games’ LEGO games are known for hiding funny secrets, which you can discover while playing Story Mode, and sometimes only in Free Play Mode. However, I think LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga for the Xbox 360 is the best one when it comes to truly rewarding players for exploring everything the game has to offer.

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga combines the content of the first two LEGO Star Wars video games. It includes all the levels and features players loved, like collectible minikits, and adds new levels that can only be unlocked by collecting gold bricks.

You earn gold bricks by becoming a True Jedi on each level, finding all the minikits, and finishing every Bounty Hunter mission. These gold bricks then unlock bonus levels, including older versions of levels, levels that were cut from the game, and completely new levels inspired by classic LEGO themes like LEGO City.

5. Borderlands 2

Guns, Guns, and More Guns

Though Aliens: Colonial Marines offered some rewards for exploration, Gearbox Software really encouraged players to search every part of the game world in their popular sequel, Borderlands 2.

I absolutely love that Borderlands 2 takes place on the wild planet Pandora! You get to play as one of six brand new Vault Hunters, and you can go on the adventure alone or team up with up to three friends. The main goal is to take down Handsome Jack, the seriously ruthless president of the Hyperion Corporation, and along the way, you help out all the quirky and often insane people who live on Pandora. It’s a blast!

You can progress through the game by completing the main story and moving from one combat arena to the next. However, exploring the world will reward you with rare weapons and loot, and you might even stumble upon funny moments, like battling psychos themed after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles deep within the Bloodshot Stronghold.

4. Halo: Reach

The Easter Eggs of Reach

As a huge Halo fan, I always loved how the series let you explore these big, open levels – it was pretty groundbreaking for consoles back then! While a lot of the Halo games on the Xbox 360 definitely rewarded you for being a completionist and checking everywhere, I think Halo: Reach really nailed it with the best hidden goodies and secrets.

Instead of hidden skulls and terminals like in Halo 2 and Halo 3, Reach introduced new collectibles – data pads and radio chatter – that revealed how the military on Reach responded to the Covenant invasion, and told the story of a group of AIs called the Assembly.

Beyond the collectible items, Reach is packed with fun, though often hidden, secrets that players can discover to enhance their experience. For example, finding switches in New Alexandria causes Covenant enemies to dance at Club Errera, and activating switches during The Package mission unlocks four Banshee vehicles.

3. Dead Rising 2

Fortune City’s Lavish Loot

The Dead Rising series is known for its expansive, open-world environments filled with secrets. Each game hides items and areas that are difficult to discover, rewarding players who thoroughly explore every corner. Dead Rising 2 is particularly generous to those who take the time to search.

In Dead Rising 2, players take on the role of Chuck Greene, a former motocross star, as he fights to survive a new zombie outbreak in Fortune City, a resort town similar to Las Vegas. His main goal is to find Zombrex, a drug that will prevent his daughter, Katie, from turning into a zombie, all while rescuing other survivors.

The game’s goals require players—whether playing alone or with a friend—to explore every part of the city while searching for Zombrex. During their search, they’ll inevitably encounter the series’ memorable villains, collectible weapon cards, hidden shortcuts, fun side activities, vehicles, and a variety of powerful weapons like swords and guns.

2. Dead Space 3

Tau Volantis’ Hidden Horrors

Throughout the Dead Space games, players always need to carefully search the frightening environments for supplies like ammo, money, energy, and upgrade parts. However, Dead Space 3 is the only game in the series that lets you do this with a friend in a two-player cooperative mode.

In Dead Space 3, Isaac Clarke teams up with John Carver, a soldier who has also survived a Necromorph outbreak. Together, they travel to the distant planet Tau Volantis, hoping to find Ellie Langford and finally put an end to the dangerous Marker threat.

As players explore abandoned ships around Volantis and the planet’s surface, they’ll find optional missions. These missions offer rewards like upgrades and weapon designs, but more importantly, they reveal deeper details about Carver’s story. Players will experience unsettling flashbacks from Carver’s past, visible only to them.

1. Minecraft

Exciting Expeditions

I still play it all the time, even though they stopped updating Minecraft back in 2018! Honestly, for me, it’s the absolute best co-op game on the Xbox 360. The game really pays you back for taking the time to explore absolutely everything – it’s so rewarding!

As a Minecraft player, I love how the game practically begs you to go out and explore! Every world feels fresh because it’s randomly made, and you’re always on the hunt for stuff you need to survive. But it’s not just about resources – discovering a rare forest, stumbling upon a village, finding a hidden temple or a sprawling mineshaft… those are the moments that really stick with you and make the game special.

These spots are usually packed with valuable items like ingots, diamonds, and enchanted books. While you could get these things by just mining straight down, it’s much more exciting and enjoyable to discover them while exploring with friends and family.
