It’s not surprising to imagine a team-up between popular action heroes. Actually, Dragon Ball and One Piece characters have already appeared together in various forms – from toys and comics to a special anime episode called Dream 9 Toriko x One Piece x Dragon Ball Z Super Collaboration Special.
This makes us consider which characters from Dragon Ball would thrive in the world of One Piece if the two series combined. Would they be able to get along with Luffy’s crew, or would they have trouble adjusting to life as pirates?
Yamcha
He Would Be a Good Captain for His Own Pirate Crew
Yamcha always felt out of place in Dragon Ball. He begins as a desert bandit, but his role quickly diminishes, and he never really gets a chance to shine again. While his Wolf Fang attack seemed promising, it wouldn’t be very effective against opponents with the special powers of a Devil Fruit.
In Dragon Ball, Yamcha gradually became less important. He briefly won Bulma’s affection, but lost her because of his decisions. It became obvious he wasn’t destined to be a major hero, and his defeat by the Saibaman felt inevitable. Now, imagine if Yamcha found himself transported to a new world – specifically, the universe of One Piece? He has the potential to be a strong captain, and his companion Puar would fit right into Eiichiro Oda’s world. We think Yamcha could be a serious contender in the race to find the One Piece.
Vegeta
Cross Epoch Confirmed That the Prince of Saiyans Would Make an Excellent Pirate
The special crossover between Eiichiro Oda and Akira Toriyama, called Cross Epoch, strongly suggested that Vegeta would fit perfectly as a pirate. It’s hard to disagree with an idea coming from two of manga’s most brilliant creators.
Vegeta might initially look down on the idea of being a pirate, considering it beneath him, but he’d quickly realize the benefits. As seen in Cross Epoch, Vegeta actually captains a crew of sky pirates, including Trunks, Nico Robin, and Usopp. Having Vegeta and Trunks together on the ship is a great foundation for a pirate storyline, though the crew could use some additional strength.
Turning Nappa into a classic, strong but not very bright pirate would be a good fit for the crew Vegeta is assembling. This pirate Vegeta would have an eye patch, similar to Goro Majima in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, but he obviously couldn’t wear a hat due to his hairstyle.
Honestly, I think Vegeta would make an amazing pirate! He’s got the strength, the ruthlessness, and he definitely acts before he thinks – all key traits, right? But what’s really cool is that underneath all that, he’s got a hidden soft side. He’d totally fit in with the kinds of powerful, complex characters Luffy always runs into in One Piece, though I don’t think Vegeta would ever go quite as far as some of them. And you know Vegeta’s pride – once he set his sights on the One Piece, he wouldn’t stop until he found it, no matter the obstacles. It would give him a reason, a purpose, even – a really good excuse, at least for a while, to not blow up the planet!
Mr. Satan
There Are Many Pirates Like Him in One Piece
Over its many episodes, One Piece has featured several characters similar to a classic con artist. These characters are imaginative and enjoy putting on a performance to trick people. They use this deception to gain popularity, earn followers, and get others to do their bidding. This talent for lying and self-promotion would make them a natural fit in the world of One Piece.
Mr. Satan’s biggest issue is he’d likely get someone weaker than him to fight as his representative, creating a tricky situation. Still, he’s the kind of easily defeated villain that Luffy and his crew usually handle within a couple of episodes.
Launch
In One Piece, She Would Find the Place She Never Had in Dragon Ball
Launch often gets overlooked in the Dragon Ball series, as she doesn’t have the same powerful fighting abilities as many other characters. The Dragon Ball anime tends to focus on characters who can destroy planets, leaving others feeling unimportant. However, in One Piece, every character has a purpose and can contribute in battles, regardless of their power level.
Launch might not seem like a natural leader, but she’d be a valuable member of almost any pirate crew. Her personality changes after a sneeze could be a real advantage in battle, and she’s generally kind and avoids unnecessary fighting. She definitely has the potential to make a big impact in the world of One Piece.
Goku
With a Good Crew Made Up of His Friends, He Could Find the One Piece
Before the intense battles and life-or-death stakes of Dragon Ball Z, Goku was a bit unpredictable. Without the pressure of saving the world, bringing people back to life, or fighting off aliens, he could have been a lot like Luffy – carefree and adventurous. However, if Goku were to become a pirate, he’d need a team that could keep up with his incredible fighting abilities.
Bulma would be a fantastic addition to his crew. Instead of hunting for Dragon Balls with a custom-built radar, she could search for treasure. Perhaps she could even discover the location of the One Piece and help Goku become the Pirate King?
Goku wouldn’t abandon Krillin, a valuable teammate, and we also spot other familiar faces from the original Dragon Ball series. Even seemingly weak characters like Oolong could find a purpose in the world of One Piece, and Yagirobee’s personality actually seems well-suited to life as a pirate.
Frieza
Galactic Tyrant Who Could Also Be a King of the Seas
Frieza’s strength, frightening personality, and talent for intimidation would make him an ideal villain in the world of One Piece. He’d probably focus on taking over land and destroying anyone who opposes him. He’s already proven to be a compelling and memorable character thanks to his iconic moments.
It’s easy to picture Frieza seizing a huge spaceship, defeating anyone who tries to stop him, and gaining even more strength by eating a Devil Fruit. We might be glad Luffy and his crew haven’t had to face him, because a fight between them would be incredibly destructive and the outcome is hard to predict.
Bojack
A Space Pirate Who Could Also Sail the Seas
Bojack is a classic pirate figure within the world of Dragon Ball, though he operates in space. He’s a truly evil villain who consistently creates trouble for the heroes and shows no mercy.
He thrives on inflicting pain and dominating his enemies, relishing every hit and injury. In the world of One Piece, he’d be a terrifying villain capable of devastating entire communities. He’d easily fit into the series and could even be a significant antagonist during one of Luffy’s adventures. His look is perfectly suited to a pirate, making him a natural fit if characters from Dragon Ball were to appear in One Piece.
