As a long-time Nintendo enthusiast with countless hours spent on my trusty original Switch and its OLED successor, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism upon hearing about these leaked images from Dbrand. The idea of a new console, addressing some of the current hardware’s shortcomings, is tantalizing indeed.
A third-party accessory maker, Dbrand, could potentially be revealing sneak peeks of the long-awaited successor to the popular gaming console, the Nintendo Switch. These leaks coincide with the heightened excitement surrounding the upcoming generation of Switch hardware.
As the Nintendo Switch approaches its eighth year as a globally beloved console, fans are growing impatient for news about Nintendo’s hardware upgrade plans. While Nintendo hasn’t officially unveiled the name of its next console yet, hints about what’s to come from the company seem to be trickling out from external sources. The latest whispers about Switch 2 have been fueled by leaked images and information from third-party contractors working with Nintendo, such as accessory makers preparing to design or manufacture items for the successor console.
A company called Dbrand, based in Canada, unveiled a showcase for a product they’re calling the “Switch 2 Killswitch” case. The display includes an image of the case containing a game console. The name of the accessory and certain distinct features within the case that differ from the original Nintendo Switch suggest that Dbrand may be giving fans and potential buyers a sneak peek at what the rumored Switch 2 might look like. With anticipation growing for the supposed improvements in the Switch 2, this promotion has garnered interest from spectators and critics alike. In an interview with Insider Gaming, Dbrand’s CEO Adam Ijaz stated that the hardware depicted inside the case mirrors the design for the Switch 2.
Switch 2 Hardware Images Potentially Leaked
On their official Twitter account, Dbrand shared pictures of the Switch 2 Killswitch case. This case design aligns with rumors suggesting modifications to the Switch 2 compared to both the original Switch and the Switch OLED. For instance, the case has spaces for an extra button on the housing of the right-side Joy-Con, which is separate from the current “Home” button.
Though Dbrand didn’t say exactly how it obtained the design for the Switch 2, its status as an accessory maker puts it in a position to know what the Switch 2 will look like. Such companies need early information about hardware designs to design and make their products in a timely manner. Dbrand is also known for bold moves that occasionally attract the ire of the major console makers. In 2021, Dbrand fell afoul of Sony, which forced it to stop selling black faceplates for the PlayStation 5. When officially branded black PS5 faceplates went on sale in 2022, Dbrand mocked Sony for not “figuring out the color black.”
Other accessory makers, such as Satisfye, might have unintentionally or intentionally hinted at the possible existence of the Switch 2. Just recently, Satisfye inadvertently released a trailer for a Switch 2 accessory called the Zengrip 2, displaying fuzzy images that appear to be the Switch 2 (or a very convincing replica).
