As a lifelong Gundam fan who grew up with the original series and has followed its evolution through various timelines and iterations, I am beyond excited for the announcement of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX! The involvement of studio Khara, Hideaki Anno, Yoji Enokido, Kazuya Tsurumaki, Take, and Ikuto Yamashita promises a fresh take on the classic franchise that will undoubtedly captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
The Mobile Suit Gundam series has unveiled a fresh endeavor, named Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced as “G-Quacks”). This collaboration is between Sunrise and studio Khara, the team behind Rebuild of Evangelion.
The details originated at the Gundam Conference in Winter 2024, and it has been confirmed that this series will be the second mainline Gundam series to air during the Reiwa Era in Japan (with the first being “Gundam: Witch from Mercury”). However, these shows may not necessarily share a direct connection. This new series is also the 16th installment within the broader Gundan franchise.
I find myself in the company of a team with a rich history, as a significant number of them were previously employed at the closed-down studio Gainax. Among these talented individuals is Hideaki Anno, the mastermind behind Evangelion, who is actively contributing to the scripting process alongside Yoji Enokido. Notably, Enokido has also played key roles in series such as Revolutionary Girl Utena, Sailor Moon SuperS, and Ouran Host Club, and he is credited for the composition of this series as well.
In this project, Kazuya Tsurumaki, Anno’s protege who has previously directed “The End of Evangelion,” “FLCL,” and co-directed all “Rebuild of Evangelion” films, is leading the direction. Other notable team members include Take, known for designing characters in “Pokémon Sun & Moon,” as the character designer, and Ikuto Yamashita, who has worked on “Shin Kamen Rider” and “Evangelion,” as the mechanical designer. Don’t miss the first trailer!
GQuuuuuuX Cast, Story and Key Dates
The Japanese TV broadcast of this series is scheduled for a future, undetermined date. But starting from January 17, 2025, some early episodes will be shown in Japanese cinemas. For now, the English trailer encourages fans to stay tuned for updates about the international release.
In the tale, Amate Yuzuriha is an ordinary student attending high school in a cosmic colony, that is, until she encounters Nyaan, a displaced war survivor. Later, Amate becomes involved in clandestine battles known as Clanb Battles, where combat takes place using mobile suits. She pilots the GQuuuuuuX. However, unexpectedly, space military and law enforcement agencies pursue her.
Tomoyo Kurosawa, known as Kumiko Omae in “Sound! Euphonium,” is set to play Amate Yuzuriha, whereas Yui Ishikawa, recognized for her role as Mikasa Ackermann in “Attack on Titan,” will provide the voice for Nyaan.
The Mobile Suit Gundam Universe
Back in 1979, I found myself utterly captivated by the debut of the Mobile Suit Gundam anime series – a groundbreaking creation masterminded by the brilliant Yoshiyuki Tomino. The journey wasn’t easy at first, but this incredible franchise quickly carved out its place among the pantheon of iconic mecha franchises in Japan, becoming a cherished part of Japanese pop culture.
The initial tale unfolds in a future where Earth, plagued by overpopulation and pollution, has expanded its presence into various space colonies. In the year 0001 Universal Century, a new epoch of space exploration commences. By UC 0079, Zeon, an autonomous colony detached from Earth, initiates a war.
The franchise has given birth to numerous series, some of which are set within different timeframes. Notably, the Universal Century (UC) timeline continues to produce new installments, while other timelines include Future Century, After Colony, After War, Correct Century, Cosmic Era, Advanced Generation, Regild Century, Post Disaster, Tenpou Era, Ad Stella, and our current Gregorian calendar (Anno Domini). The majority of Gundam stories are set within the UC, but some well-known and more recent anime like Gundam Wing (set in After Colony), Gundam SEED (Cosmic Era), or Iron-Blooded Orphans (Post Disaster) are set within alternate timeframes.
The airdate for anime series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuu X on television remains undisclosed as of now, but it’s anticipated that it will become available internationally.
