Players of The Outer Worlds are receiving a free upgrade to the premium Spacer’s Choice Edition. Recent patch notes detail how to get the extra content at no cost. This is the first update to the game since June 2023, and the developers are planning another substantial update soon.
When it launched in October 2019, Obsidian’s space RPG, The Outer Worlds, received very positive reviews, maintaining an 82% satisfaction rating from over 16,000 Steam users. The game, inspired by sci-fi shows like Futurama and Firefly, quickly became popular thanks to its funny writing, compelling story, interesting world, and solid gameplay. It cleverly satirizes corporate excess, the risks of unchecked capitalism, and the dangers of blindly following brands.
Players can now get all the downloadable content for The Outer Worlds for free! A recent update means the game is transitioning to a single version called the Spacer’s Choice Edition. This is happening because the original game will soon be removed from most digital stores on May 27th, being replaced by the upgraded edition. If you already own The Outer Worlds on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC (through Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG), you’ll automatically receive the Spacer’s Choice Edition. The developers have confirmed that anyone who owns the base game by May 27th will get the upgrade, and you can even buy it now to save around $10.
As a huge fan of The Outer Worlds, I’m so excited about the Spacer’s Choice Edition! It finally bundles in both the ‘Peril on Gorgon’ and ‘Murder on Eridanos’ story expansions, which means you get absolutely everything the game has to offer. But it’s not just about the DLC – they’ve also made a bunch of improvements to the original game! We’re talking a higher level cap, a cool dynamic weather system, smarter enemies, and a generally smoother, prettier experience. It really feels like the definitive way to play.
Players on PC and current-generation consoles can easily upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition. However, owners of older consoles will need to already own the original game and both of its expansions to get the upgrade. This is particularly difficult for Nintendo Switch players, as there isn’t a version of The Outer Worlds for the newer Switch 2 console. To help with this, Obsidian is offering a discount on the base game and DLCs for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners, bringing the price down to $24.99 and $14.99 respectively.

This latest update fixes several longstanding bugs, resolving problems in various quests and common issues like falling through the floor or getting stuck on objects. While this patch mainly focuses on cleaning up existing problems, Obsidian is already working on another update. They haven’t revealed all the details yet, but the next patch will add a new weapon type – grenades – to The Outer Worlds.
