Last Chance To Play 5 PS Plus Games Before They Are Gone

Sony made a smart move by offering free games each month to PlayStation Plus (PS+) subscribers, starting with the PS3. This has expanded over time to include a large library of games, similar to Xbox Game Pass. While it’s up for debate which service offers more value, a key issue with PS+ and similar services is that games don’t stay available forever. Eventually, games are removed from the PS+ library, and players are given a month to finish playing them. So, what games should you prioritize before the current selection is updated on May 19th?

Games are often removed from subscription services when licensing deals expire, and several popular titles will be leaving PlayStation Plus in May, including Control: Ultimate Edition and The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan. Let’s take a look at why these games are worth playing and see the full list of titles departing the service.

We’ll be highlighting how quickly you can finish these PS Plus games, since they’re all beatable before May 19th. Plus, keep in mind that MotoGP 25 and Little Hope are also leaving the service soon.

Control: Ultimate Edition

How Long To Beat: About 13 Without Extras

Control: Ultimate Edition is the complete version of the original game, including all updates and downloadable content for the best possible experience. It’s a standout title from Remedy Entertainment, arguably even surpassing their acclaimed Alan Wake series, with which it shares a connection. The story begins with Jesse Faden arriving at the Federal Bureau of Control in search of her brother, Dylan. She finds the building eerily empty and quickly realizes something is terribly wrong. Through a series of events, Jesse unexpectedly becomes the director of the FBC and gains access to a powerful weapon.

What’s neat about this game is that you can upgrade your weapon, changing it from a pistol into something more powerful like a shotgun. You also get supernatural abilities, like using telekinesis to fling objects at enemies, which helps you fight the infected people at the Federal Bureau of Control. While the action is exciting, the game really shines with its creepy atmosphere as you explore the Bureau and uncover the mystery of what happened – and where Jesse’s brother is. Now is the perfect time to play Control, especially since the sequel, Control Resonant, is planned for 2026 and will star a new character named Dylan. Download Control now while it’s available on PS+ – it’s easily the best game on the list of titles leaving the service in May.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man Of Medan

How Long To Beat: About 4.5 Without Extras

Man of Medan is the first game in The Dark Pictures Anthology, a series created by Supermassive Games as a follow-up to their popular game, Until Dawn. It tells a standalone horror story about a group of friends who go on a diving trip and discover a seemingly abandoned freighter. Like Until Dawn, the game lets you experience the story through the eyes of five different characters. Gameplay focuses on exploring the ship, finding clues, and making quick decisions during action sequences, rather than solving complex puzzles.

Similar to Until Dawn, any character can die in these games, and their fate will impact how the story unfolds. A standout feature of The Dark Pictures Anthology is its multiplayer mode – you can play locally with friends by sharing the controller, or make decisions together online through voting. Whether you play solo or with others, the game is consistently suspenseful. While the story of The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan might not appeal to everyone, it’s an enjoyable, relatively short experience that can be completed in a few hours. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope is also available, but if you’re choosing between the two, Man of Medan is the better starting point.

Soul Hackers 2

How Long To Beat: About 30.5 Without Extras

I’m really excited about Soul Hackers 2! It’s a follow-up to a somewhat lesser-known game, Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, that originally came out way back on the Sega Saturn. The story throws you into the world of hacking, where you’re trying to prevent a global catastrophe. Okay, the whole ‘save the world’ thing is a bit of a trope, but honestly, what I’m most looking forward to are the connections you build with your team – both when you’re battling through dungeons and just hanging out in Japan. Plus, the gameplay sounds fantastic! Being able to save whenever you want in dungeons is a huge relief, and I love the idea of exploring and finding treasure with enemies roaming around in real-time.

Combat in Soul Hackers 2 will feel familiar to fans of games like Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, though it has its own unique twists. Characters attack and use skills linked to their digital demons. Exploiting enemy weaknesses deals extra damage, but doesn’t grant an additional turn. Instead, damage from hitting weaknesses builds up, powering a powerful super attack at the end of each round. You can also freely switch demons between party members. With its adaptable battle system, stylish anime art, and interesting story, Soul Hackers 2 is a worthwhile spinoff that deserves more recognition.

Sand Land

How Long To Beat: About 20 Without Extras

I’m really excited about Sand Land! It’s based on a manga, and honestly, it feels like the creators really built on what they were going for in the original comic. What’s especially cool is that it’s the last project Akira Toriyama, the guy who made Dragon Ball, worked on before he passed away – you can totally see his style in the character designs. The story is pretty straightforward: you play as Beelzebub, a demon prince, and you gather a team of demons and humans to find this legendary water source. If they can find it, it could finally end the fighting between demons and humans, but naturally, not everyone wants that to happen. It’s a post-apocalyptic open-world game set in the desert, and I can’t wait to play it!

In Sand Land, you’ll battle enemies using standard RPG combat, but the game truly shines with its vehicles. You start with simple carts, then unlock and upgrade a tank, and eventually pilot a powerful mech. You can even ride around on dinosaur-like creatures! While the open world isn’t as detailed as games like Fallout, Sand Land offers a unique take on the post-apocalyptic genre with its focus on vehicle acquisition. This, combined with the legacy of the legendary Akira Toriyama, makes it a game well worth playing.

Mortal Shell: Enhanced Edition

How Long To Beat: About 10.5 Without Extras

Originally released for PlayStation 4 in 2020, Mortal Shell received an enhanced version for PlayStation 5 in 2021. Both the original and enhanced editions are still available for download. At its heart, Mortal Shell is a challenging action RPG in the style of the Souls games, but with a unique twist. Instead of creating a character and improving their stats, players find and upgrade different bodies, called Shells, which act as distinct classes. Finding these Shells and investing resources into them unlocks new abilities and skills.

The first Shell plays like a heavily armored knight, wielding a large sword and moving deliberately. Instead of traditional blocking, you can reinforce your body, and timing this correctly before an enemy attack will stun them, opening a window for a counterattack. However, if you take too much damage, you’ll be forced out of the Shell. You can try to return, but if your normal body dies, you’ll have to start over and retrieve your lost currency. This is a distinctive mechanic for a Soulslike game, and the Shell is very durable, so players might benefit from practicing with Mortal Shell first, as mastering it could take weeks of careful leveling and strategy.
